In this newest addition to the Unsung Americans series, Yates draws on a variety of sources to examine the life of Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), perhaps best known today for writing "This Land Is Your Land" and for inspiring a generation of musicians including Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. While much of the book is devoted to Guthrie's role as a champion of the oppressed and underprivileged, the picture that ultimately emerges is of a troubled and immature dreamer who, in his quest for self-fulfillment, avoided his responsibilities to his family (three wives left him) and his employers. Emphasizing her subject's sensitivity to the political and social issues of his times, Yates discusses the changing climate of the country, explaining how these changes are reflected in Guthrie's music. Especially useful are her overviews of the growth of labor movements and the backlash against Communist organizers, the creation of social programs to counteract the Depression, and the effects of WWII on American society. Grade 6 Up?American history is vividly and candidly portrayed in this biography of one of our country's foremost balladeers. Woody Guthrie's story is at once a tale of personal tragedy, survival, and the turmoil created by poverty and natural disaster. Much of his life was played out against the devastating effect of his sister's death when he was six, poverty bred of the dust storms of 1935, and the Great Depression. The hardships faced as his family left Oklahoma for California where they became migrant farm workers is reminiscent of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. These experiences shaped Guthrie's social conscience and political outlook. Throughout his life, music was a constant, however, and the songwriter used the sounds around him and his concerns for the downtrodden as inspiration. In addition to being a wonderful historical account of American folk music and the times in which the subject lived, this book is also an absorbing read. A crisp style brings to life Guthrie's constant struggle against poverty and social injustice and his final fight against Huntington's chorea, a genetically linked disease. Gr. 6-10. From the age of six, when his older sister burned to death, Woody Guthrie experienced hardship. His mother's battle with Huntington's chorea, from which Woody also died, tore his family apart. When his father was seriously burned, and both parents were hospitalized, Woody was on his own at age 15. His fascination with the songs and stories of the migrant workers he often encountered helped his innate musical and writing gifts blossom. In spite of a personal life marked by marital strife, personal instability, and the tragic death of his four-year-old daughter (ironically, by fire), he wrote more than 1,000 songs and, like his close friend Huddie Ledbetter (better known as "Leadbelly"), popularized and preserved the traditional music of his forebears. Yates describes Woody's creative life and provides important historical information, including a harrowing description of the great dust storm of 1935 and its aftermath. Woody's friendly relationships with labor union organizers and members of the Communist Party, as well as his relationships with other musicians--Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan among them--add significant interest to this well-written biography. "Glider Basics from First Flight to Solo" by Tom Knauff is hands down the best, most practical guide for anyone that wants to learn to fly gliders. It is the accumulation of his decades of experience as a flight instructor and FAA flight examiner and along with his "After Solo" book, hits all the flight requirements in the FAA standards for training. Tom maintains and updates the book as needed to keep up with the latest FAA requirements. Tom is also a competition pilot, multiple world record holder in gliders, and SSA hall of fame member that has a deep interest in safety that is evident in all of his training books. He speaks with authority and deep knowledge of the subject to help you learn to fly safely every step of the way.

Glider Basics is clearly written and is organized to introduce concepts in the same sequence as practical flight training. The writing is clear and accessible to readers of all ages too. The chapters tend to be short and focused on key knowledge and skills you'll need as a pilot. No previous experience or aircraft knowledge is required, in fact he makes no assumptions on previous knowledge at all.

I can add that I earned my own Glider Pilots license using Tom's flight training books as the backbone of my flight training. Of course if you want to get a pilots license you'll also need other additional texts required by the FAA to pass their knowledge and flight tests (books such as FAR/AIM, Pilots Handbook Aeronautical Knowledge, and the Glider Flying Handbook are a few of the books the FAA draws upon to create the tests themselves). Tom's books focus on learning flying skills and provide vital knowledge you'll need every time you climb into a glider. They are an essential part of any glider pilots library.

For the distinguished gent

I have the first two volumes and this was purchased as a Father's Day present for myself to complete the set. Well written stories. Captivating read for any distinguished gentleman. I also find that the articles about persons unknown to myself are a great read as well. Perfect to explore at ones leisure.

John Rosemond is a family psychologist who has directed mental-health programs and been in full-time private practice working with families and children. Good, with some caveats

I wanted to rate this 3.5 stars

This book will probably work well for you if you are the typical parent whose kids have too many "privileges" such as their own TV, own phone, own computer, lots of social time with friends, etc. to take away and restore, which is probably why your children are having homework problems in the first place.

On the other hand, if your homework-challenged child does not have a lot in terms of things to take away, this book doesn't offer much in terms of remedies. Not every parent wishes to or can afford to give their child a computer, or a TV--or maybe the child is a voracious reader and could care less about being confined to quarters. Are you going to take away all of a child's books for failing to do homework (much of which is pointless anyway, to be honest here, and smart children know this)? Somehow I doubt it.

As to his checklists that he wants the teacher to sign off on, well, good luck. Not only do teachers have more and more admin work these days, the schools in many cases are trying to push the daily signing off nonsense onto the parents with those unnecessary student planners. Either the work is done, or it isn't. Daily check-off sheets are just an annoyance to the adults who have to deal with them.

What is most valuable about this book, is the way he explains how the responsibility for homework completion should be on the child, and that it is not your job to be teaching concepts, helping with homework and signing off on checklists.

Unfortunately, the schools have brainwashed parents into actually doing homework and projects with and for their children under the guise of "being involved" --to the point of textbooks and worksheets assigning homework telling parents to do flashcard practice, or other drill work!!

These days, you really have to stand firm when you tell the teacher (at the beginning of the school year) that you expect your child to be assigned homework that does NOT involve you (other than perhaps to purchase needed supplies or drive to the library), and that you expect your child to be graded accordingly because he/she is doing his/her own work. Yes, you are an interested parent, you go to the Open Houses and Parent Conferences, but you are firm in your resolve that school is your child's responsibility, or "job", if you'd like to think of it in those terms.

I feel this book needs to be revised somewhat (it is from the early '90s), because he does not address how bad this shoving off of responsibility from the teacher/school to the parent has become of late.

common sense help

I bought and read this after a kindergarten teacher friend of mine told me about it. I now have bought several copies, and have given them away. This is a book any parent can benefit from, but I think if you have young children it is the most helpful.

Great - Much to My Surprise

My wife picked this book up somewhere, but I was the first to read it. I wasn't optimistic. It starts out great, describing the problem(s) that many parents have, and describing the way things should be. Fine! But how do I go from here to there? Well, he tells you. And whereas his basic method(s) don't necessarily work with all kids, they work great with our main problem kid (6th grade).
In a nutshell, his teachers sign off on a checklist each day indicating whether or not his did all his homework, behaved, and completed his seatwork. It's his job to get the sign off. Any No's, and his loses priviledges (TV, phone, computer) for the evening. No's on as many as 3 days in a week means he loses priviledges for the week-end as well. If he get's all Yes's, then he has his priviledges, and we in no way bug him about homework. All we care about is the daily checklist. No excuses are accepted.
This kid never seemed to care what grades he got, and 'lost' or 'forgot' homework all the time. We wasted way to much effort trying to get him to behave responsibly. And all we had to do was put together a form, discuss the new rules with him, and talk to his teachers about it. It has worked great and his teachers are thrilled with his turnaround: not just on his homework but on his attitude and behavior.
My only gripe with the book is that the author, while giving lip service to the fact that there are as many kids that are below average as there are above average, nevertheless used almost exclusively examples of kids who basic IQ is well above average.

Fuel Cells: Fundamentals to Applications is a concise source of the basic electrochemical principles and engineering aspects involved in the development and commercialization of fuel cells. It describes the applications and techno-economic assessment of fuel cell technologies along with an in-depth discussion of conventional and novel approaches pursued for generating energy.

This book is divided into four parts. Parts I and II explain basic and applied electrochemistry relevant to an understanding of fuel cells. Part III covers engineering and technology aspects and Part IV, applications and economics. The first part covers, in detail, the electrode kinetics and electrocatalysis of charge-transfer reactions, and leading electrochemical technologies with focus on relevance to fuel cells. The second part addresses the governing principles of fuel cells, electrocatalysis of fuel cell reactions and experimental techniques pertinent to fuel cell research and development. The third part is devoted to modeling of fuel cell systems and a thorough discussion of fuels, fuel processing and fuel storage, transmission, and distribution. The final part deals with the status of the fuel cell technologies, their applications and economics.

An Overview

There really are not as many calculations covering how fuel cells work as I would have wanted. It does work as an overview of the subject. Many of the graphs and graphics are poor quality, very fuzzy. You can get a general idea on the subject of fuel cells. Don't expect aything too in depth or detailed problem examples.
