Flotsametrics and the Floating World: How One Man's Obsession Revolutionized Ocean Science, by Curtis Ebbesmeyer

Pioneering oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer unravels the mystery of marine currents, uncovers the astonishing story of flotsam, and changes the world's view of trash, the ocean, and our global environment.

Curtis Ebbesmeyer is no ordinary scientist. He's been a consulting oceanographer for multinational firms and a lead scientist on international research expeditions, but he's never held a conventional academic appointment. He seized the world's imagination as no other scientist could when he and his worldwide network of beachcomber volunteers traced the ocean's currents using thousands of sneakers and plastic bath toys spilled from storm-tossed freighters.

Now, for the first time, Ebbesmeyer tells the story of his lifelong struggle to solve the sea's mysteries while sharing his most surprising discoveries. He recounts how flotsam has changed the course of history - leading Viking mariners to safe harbors, Columbus to the New World, and Japan to open up to the West - and how it may even have made the origin of life possible. He chases icebergs and floating islands; investigates ocean mysteries from ghost ships to a spate of washed-up severed feet on Canadian beaches; and explores the enormous floating "garbage patches" and waste-heaped "junk beaches" that collect the flotsam and jetsam of industrial society.

Finally, Ebbesmeyer reveals the rhythmic and harmonic order in the vast oceanic currents called gyres - "the heartbeat of the world " - and the threats that global warming and disintegrating plastic waste pose to the seas...and to us.

From Publishers Weekly
Part oceanography lesson, part memoir, this cheerful book examines Ebbesmeyer's life and work as a pioneering oceanographer (the first to work for Mobil/Standard Oil, in 1969) and connoisseur of beach-combed artifacts. His primary interest is ocean currents, especially gyres—great circular, interlocking currents that sweep the Earth's waters with clockwork regularity—and the flotsam they carry around the planet. Everything from athletic shoes and bathtub toys to messages in bottles and corpses have provided data to help Ebbesmeyer trace currents. He recounts how flotsam guided colonization and exploration, from Norse explorers to Christopher Columbus (the first to master the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre). Today, Ebbesmeyer says, the human propensity for creating garbage has also made flotsam an environmental concern, with too many studies neatly filed away and forgotten. This account, made lively with the help of journalist Scigliano (Puget Sound), might encourage many readers to dream of roundi[ng] the gyres like Ebbesmeyer, searching out the world's trashiest beaches. From Booklist
Stuff that washes ashore elicits the discernment of oceanographer Ebbesmeyer. He is interested both in the intrinsic properties of what beachcombers find and in what flotsam and jetsam reveal about ocean currents. For this account of an offbeat area of research, Ebbesmeyer intersperses the arc of his career, which began in the oil industry, with an eclectic suite of stories related to floating objects. Some tales concern instruments purposely thrown overboard by scientists like himself; others are about the lore of messages in bottles; most, however, concentrate on material unintentionally cast adrift. Through a combination of computer modeling and identification of the place and time something—whether a shipping container or a person—went into the water, Ebbesmeyer defines 11 great surface currents on which flotsam rides. These gyres convey telling information about the health of the oceans, as their circular action sorts immense quantities of trash, some marooned midocean in garbage patches, some preferentially beached in locales that Ebbesmeyer visits. With a whimsical mood overlaying serious science, Ebbesmeyer’s work will appeal to the environmentally minded. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
“Part oceanography lesson, part memoir, this cheerful book examines Ebbesmeyer’s life and work as a pioneering oceanographer (the first to work for Mobil/Standard Oil, in 1969) and connoisseur of beach-combed artifacts.” (Publishers Weekly )

“With a whimsical mood overlaying serious science, Ebbesmeyer’s work will appeal to the environmentally minded.” (Booklist )

“As much genial personal memoir as pop-oceanography exposition…When science goes right, we discover how mid-ocean spills of hockey gloves or rubber ducks enhance oceanographic understanding; (The Guardian )

“Light and lively...Shoes, messages in bottles, and floating rubber ducks have kept Ebbesmeyer’s eye on the big picture. Besides, as readers will readily agree, they’ve been a lot of fun to study.” (Natural History magazine )

Whether you want to learn more about how the oceans tick or how we are affecting our environment, or to reminisce about science not being what it used to be, this is a very enjoyable, if at times dark, book. (Nature )

An extensive collection of facts and stories traversing history and geography.
By Raymond
An extensive collection of facts and stories traversing history and geography, with a detailed index and a detailed table of contents. It's not a book you will want to read straight through, like a novel, because the stories and explanations vary so greatly from chapter to chapter. It's as well organized as its many topics will allow, and the prose is clearly written. I found the book enjoyable, though I recommend reading it in small doses.

Where Earth's "stuff" goes and how it gets there.
By steffen schmidt
Ebbesmeyer tells a great story about Earth's flotsam and jetsam while serving as a role model for future oceanographers and coastal policy managers. It's a fascinating and great read.

I teach and write about coastal policy and coastal issues. None is more fascinating than the journey of "stuff" on the rivers that flow across Earth's oceans and move this stuff around, depositing some of it on the beaches, wetlands, marshes, and shorelines of the world. Ebbesmeyer is the "biographer of coastal stuff" as I call him. He wants to know where it came from and what it is.

Marine debris as it is scientifically called, is the fingerprint of the living, moving, blowing, and churning planet in which we live. Debris comes in two favors natural and human.

Natural debris includes anything that grows and floats! Dead whales and giant octopuses, cocoanuts, fascinating seed pods, shells.

Human debris, well you can guess. It's all the things that we have made which get dumped on purpose, fall overboard and float away like Nike sneakers and the now famous yellow plasticky "duckies" that Ebbesmeyer has traced for years around the world. It also includes everything that gets ripped up by its steel and concrete roots by tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons, waterspouts and tornadoes and then deposited in that huge bathtub that covers most of the Earth's surface, the oceans.

In this book you will follow the endless spiraling gyres that circulate Earths waters around the planet and why these huge virtual rivers are so important to our climate and marine life.

You will discover to much delight how a beer company used these marketing channels to distribute thousands of floating bottles of their brew as a marketing gimmick. You will also uncover mysteries of great interest and puzzles as yet un solved about humans and natural phenomena such as the giant garbage patch in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I have always wondered about those sneakers with a foot still in them that keep wasting ashore in the Pacific Northwest. Murder? Natural deaths? A joke being played by a secret prankster society? I'm hoping Flotsametrics can help answer this and so many other mysteries on the wrack line, the area along the beach and shore where stuff accumulates as the wind and tides do their work.

When I launch the Massive Open Online Class (MOOC) on coastal policy, a free course which you will be able to take on the Internet, we will use many of Ebbesmeyer's marvelous discoveries and insights to help understand the magic and the challenges of our coastal zones. Coastal@iastate.edu is my address for more information on all of this.

This book is written with style and humor but in the final analysis it is a scientific book about a fascinating force on Earth that affects beaches, fish, coral reefs, and life itself. I say it's a must read.

Flotsametrics and the Floating World
By Andrew Wilson
This is a book that provided me with fresh ideas about the ocean gyres of the world and how these affect so many things we rarely wonder about - how salmon return, how oil spills move, why trash accumulates in parts of the ocean, how far floating bottles go and how quickly, and the survivability of some plastic fabrics and materials. The material presented is most interesting. How it is presented is somewhat repetitive and the book is longer than it need be. The price was right.
