Look beyond the black and white

The book was intimidating at first. The pages are black and white. There is no color. There are no pictures. Nothing to keep you drawn. However, the topics have a flow. It is an easy read, understandable and informative. Some interesting concepts.

God this book is rough. Small type and little images Make it very hard to read. Each chapter takes 2-4 hours to read. Paper quality is very thin and cheap(Tears easily). This was a rental for a decent price with is the only saving grace...

Different From Other Reference Texts But Okay

I'm a retired EE hobbyist, now interested in 3D printing. I learned that Autodesk offered free use of Fusion 360 for hobbyists and some others so I tried it. I had been using other free and paid-for programs. Fusion is indeed a powerful program and I fully expected a learning curve. Initially, when I got "stuck", I referred to online tutorials and online info. Not unexpectedly, I found that some of the material was "dated". That is, it was for previous versions. Also, I found that "some steps were left out". That is, the author must have assumed a certain level of familiarity so didn't show every step. Videos from Autodesk seemed "skimpy".

I got tired of stopping a design, simple as it was, to go search the internet. As with other hobbies and interests, I searched for a referenced book. I never intended to read the book cover-to-cover. There don't seem to be THAT many Fusion reference books out there. This book was "recent", but I read some scathing reviews. Should I order or not?

I decided that I didn't want to spend what remains of my life trying to learn Fusion. It was worth taking a chance by ordering this. It IS different from all other reference books I have every purchased:

There isn't any index in the back!! As a reference, I would have preferred going to the index and then back to the chapter of interest. Of course, you can start at the front of the book and thumb through each chapter hoping to find what you're looking for.

I DID look at all of the videos even though I would never use some of Fusion's features. They are short so you probably won't fall asleep before they finish. They seem to track almost identically with the printed material in the book and on the video site. I don't know why you are limited to just one year of viewing. I really didn't think the videos added much but then some learn more by watching and being told rather than just reading a book.

Based upon limited use, I did find that the examples DID provide all of the steps needed to complete an example. You can download files for the examples so that you don't have to enter all of the date to get ready to do the example. I didn't do any of the practice problems since I was not interested in being "certified" as a Fusion user.

So, maybe this book is not like what I was used to or expecting. But, it has helped me several times already. Due to the lack of other reference books and that this book is at least somewhat useful, I would recommend it.

Exactly the book I needed!

This would have been a huge help when I first tried learning Fusion 360 with the tutorials on Autodesk's website. Problems with going back and forth between that website and Fusion 360 were frustrating to the point where I gave up early on. A good book was what was needed.

And here it is. Watching the videos are more or less like attending a class, after which one brings the textbook home and does the homework. I have NO need to have access to the videos while Fusion 360 is open - everything I need to see again is in the book. VERY glad I bought it.

After you order the book and get your "Shipping Confirmation" email from Amazon, forward that email to the "courseware..." address that you can find in the book preview above, book page "xvii" - then you'll get the video lesson access before the book arrives. I've had NO problems with support from ASCENT.

Jeff Madura serves as the SunTrust Bank Professor of Finance at Florida Atlantic University. The recipient of multiple awards for excellence in teaching and research, Dr. Madura has written several successful finance texts, including FINANCIAL MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS. His research on international finance has been published in numerous journals, including JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS; JOURNAL OF MONEY, CREDIT AND BANKING; FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT; JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH; and FINANCIAL REVIEW. Dr. Madura has served as a consultant for international banks, securities firms, and other multinational corporations. In addition, he is a former director of the Eastern Finance Association and a former director and president of the Southern Finance Association. He earned his B.S. and M.A. from Northern Illinois University and his D.B.A. from Florida State University. Roland Fox graduated from Manchester University and joined PriceWaterhouseCoopers. "SPSS Survival Manual" VS "Discovering Statistics using SPSS for Windows"

I will have to say this one, "SPSS Survival Manual" is the winner.

I've owned this book and a few others on SPSS and or multivariate data analysis for several years. However, a friend of mine recently called me and asked me how to do a few less ordinary things in SPSS. After spending some time on the phone with him I decided to look back at these books and suggest/give one to my friend.

I think the "SPSS Survival Manual" by Julie Pallant is somewhat of an easier read for the graduate student or market researcher who wants to quickly look up a certain how-to topic for SPSS.

"Discovering Statistics Using SPSS for Windows" by Andy Field, on the other hand goes into more detail on the statistics behind the techniques in SPSS. This one reads a little more like a text book though and can be a bit dry/technical unless this is your thing.

I tested the two by seeing which would do a better job of explaining how to conduct a Factor Analysis (PCA) in SPSS. "Discovering Statistics..." by Andy Field would have lost my friend right away, and by page three or four is listing formulas and quadrant plots. "SPSS Survival Manual" by Pallant on the other hand got into the `how to' part rather quickly with clear to follow examples.

If you're like my friend/more into getting it done quickly and correctly without getting bogged down with the academic detail, then definitely purchase the "SPSS Survival Manual".

This is a very helpful SPSS book

I bought this book based on a recommendation from my advisor. It is a great way for SPSS users to find out how to go about conducting the analysis that they need to do. The help function in SPSS is not terribly helpful, and the manual that can be purchased for a lot of extra money is so large and combersome that it is also not much help. This book makes SPSS much easier to use.

Anyone wanting to use SPSS just MUST get this book - especially if you are working on your dissertation! She makes it easy and understandable with her step by step process. Unless you are a super-sophisticated statistician, you will be so glad you got this book! I have recommended it to my other doctoral cohorts and they agree with me - even my chairperson of my committee who is a statistical genius highly recommends it!

One of this century's preeminent artists, Louise Bourgeois recently was the subject of a major one-person exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art, and she represented the United States in the 1993 Venice Biennale. This exquisitely designed volume, which includes 133 color reproductions, is a testimony to the importance of the act of drawing to this highly autobiographical artist, who is known primarily for her sculptures. Produced over the course of 50 years, the drawings are seen side by side with Bourgeois' own observations about her personal life, her work, and the genesis and sources of certain works, offering a very intimate vision of Bourgeois as a woman and as an artist, as well as insight into the creative act of making art.

Celebrated as an innovative sculptor and feminist, octogenarian Bourgeois is less well known for the naive chemistry of her quirky drawings. This compact publication is issued on the occasion of an exhibition of 130 of her memorably diminutive graphic compositions. All are illustrated in small-format color plates with a documenting checklist. The heart of the book, however, is the valuable text. Having interviewed Bourgeois over several days, Rinder (curator, 20th-century art, Univ. Art Museum, Berkeley) gained general insight into her work and recorded her specific commentaries upon 66 drawings, making them especially vibrant and more accessible to the viewer. Bourgeois' abstract and constructivist sculpture is distinctly organic in form, often sexual in connotation, and always feminine in the most powerful sense of the term. Her work seems to arise from deep within the subconscious, a truth attested to in this hauntingly beautiful volume of her drawings and writings. Free from the weighty demands of her sculptural materials--alabaster, plaster, latex, bronze, and marble--Bourgeois on paper is able to more fluidly explore the images that obsess her: houses, self-portraits, eyes, water, and vegetation. Presented in chronological order beginning in 1938, and accompanied by the artist's tense, enigmatic, and tenacious commentary on her psychological predilections, these highly charged images reflect her lifelong quest for comprehension and deep belief in art as exorcism. Although accorded little critical attention until the 1970s when she was already in her sixties, French-born Bourgeois and her evocative drawings and magnificent sculpture have grown stronger, more daring, and more autonomous with each passing year. lackluster sketches, interesting writing

There are vintage Bourgeois books that justify the inflated pricetag: "Memory and Architecture", for example.
But looking through "Drawings and Observations," it is hard to find any visual to indicate that the artist is an inspiring genius. In fact, the works range from juiceless mediocrity to cartoony. They're like the level that most artists would toss.
The only redeeming value I can see is psychological insight - just in case her truly fine work doesn't do the job for you.

The writing, on the other hand, has tremendous value on how this artist thinks as she creates.
All of her work seems to have depth of thought behind it. Art students would benefit from reading this book. And the sketches, even though they are of no significance aesthetically, are important as illustrations in tandem with the writing.

NOTE: It's heartening that, at this point, the price has come down so that it is now affordable for art schools and students.
