More than we expected

My two grandsons, ages 5 and 7, are fascinated by adventure, swords, treasure, and secrets. I picked up the first two volumes of Treasure Island in this series because I thought they would enjoy reading them aloud themselves. They love them! We read them together, their parents read them with them, and we all are eager for more of the story to be published. All this so we can delve into Stevenson's original together in the very near future, maybe as early as next summer. Hurry with the rest of the story, please.

Great first chapter book to read to my 4.5 year old boy

Great to read to kids who want a little more than picture books. It seemed like my 4.5 year old was looking for a longer story although he loves to read almost anything. Also great for kids to read. Loved the pictures and I thought they did well summarizing for a younger age group.

We have read books 1-4 and plan to get the 5th and 6th. Good, simple adventure story that is easy for my 3 and 5 year old to follow. Well writen for this age group.

The kingdom of God

This will not be a best seller as its message does not sit well with modern western Christianity. As a Christian you owe it to yourself to read this book because, if Wayne is correct, there will be some very unpleasant surprises come judgement day. Bottom line is that we are either in the kingdom of god or the kingdom of this world and don't fool yourself by saying you are part of god's kingdom if you live a lifestyle and display the fruits of the worldly kingdom. The importance of seeking first the kingdom is put forward forcefully but not in a radical or legalistic way.

Succinct and Helpful Description of the Kingdom of God

One of the greatest weaknesses of the church today is our neglect of "The Gospel of the Kingdom". Evangelical churches teach part of the gospel and what they teach is true - but it's not the whole truth. Churches teach the gospel of salvation, but they do not reference that this salvation only comes from accepting Jesus' gracious invitation into the Kingdom of God. Churches also do not spend enough time show believers how to live their lives in the context of the Kingdom of God.

I am not pointing a finger at the church, because I spent a significant portion of my pastoral career doing this. Wayne Barrett is not part of my journey of becoming a preacher of the gospel of the Kingdom. He does a great job of introducing us to the Kingdom of God and what life in this Kingdom is like. He does a great job of focusing on the Church (with a capital "c") and his section on the spiritual gifts is valuable.

My only negative about the book is a small one. I found myself wishing at a few points that Barrett went into more detail. This, however, should not keep you from reading this book. If you are trying to gain an introductory understanding of the Kingdom of God, than this book will be very helpful. If you already a student of the Kingdom of God, you will find some helpful insights.

Saving myself from becoming a library book thief

This is one of those books I have to own. I'd checked it out of my college library and found before I was more than a few pages into it that I wanted to highlight great quotes and food for thought. So I bought highlighting tape so I wouldn't get nabbed for highlighting a library book but would be able to find them quickly again for a research paper I'm writing.

All well and good, but within a few pages I'd found such good points and quotes I want to preserve to refer back to, that I'm ordering it. Otherwise I can tell I'm going to have trouble returning this book to the library - at all. They frown on that - and it might keep me from registering for classes next semester. Better to spring for the price now and avoid those fines and guilt.

A highly recommended read to understand a facinating personality and war genius

Blumenson did a superb job of blending quotes from Patton's diary, notes, and letters into very readable and logically flowing text. He also does a great job of filling in the blanks of what was going on in history at the time Patton recorded his thoughts and beliefs. A fascinating look into the mind of Patton. It goes to show you that knowing history can bring about triumph. The 1940 to 1945 volume is not included in Volumes I and II, but is a very fascinating and lively read if you're a WW II history buff.

For those who maintain that Patton was a mere "fighting general", this book will astonish. You almost come away from his eerily prescient diary entries with the feeling that he just MIGHT have lived past lives as a conquering general. Can't recommend it highly enough.

About the Author
Dave Ellis is a leadership coach, author, educator, and philanthropist. He is a respected lecturer and electrifying workshop leader who has captivated audiences worldwide since first sharing his principles in 1979. Ellis got started in education in 1976, when he taught junior high school math. After getting a master's degree in mathematics, he taught computer science for six years at National American University, where he became assistant dean of student services. He began training coaches in 1983 and started a public course for coaches in 1993. Ehh...

First off, and most importantly, I wouldn't rent this as an E-Book if at all possible, ESPECIALLY if you're using it for a class. There are a lot of exercises on the book that require you to write inside the book itself, and having to print out a page, or find some way to get around not being able to physically manipulate the text is frustrating. Get the physical copy if you can.

Second of all, the book itself is pretty pointless if you have a good sense of self-awareness. For the everyday individual, most of this is common knowledge and this book ends up being little more than pages of busy work with only the occasional spark that comes with finding something new. Considering that this book is almost 80 dollars to buy, that's incredibly annoying.

However, if you haven't been in school for a while, or you aren't really sure of where you stand as a student, this might be a good buy. Not only does the text book go over things like how to study, how to manage time, and how to keep goals, but it also goes over things like suicide prevention, sexual health, and how to manage money.

Regardless, pretty much everyone whose buying this book is buying it because they have to, so none of the above really matters.

A great resource for adults returning to college.

I am returning to school in the fall, having been out for some time I feel that this text is going to be an invaluable resource. After skimming through the book, I have already stumbled across some great tips that I am anxious to dive into deeper. While it may seem annoying that you cannot rent this book or purchase a used one for the class you are taking, keep in mind that there are assignments in this book that you directly hand in to your professor. I chose the loose leaf version because it was MUCH cheaper than the bound paperback version. I purchased a 1" binder with a D-ring and it fit perfectly.

Why is this book so expensive?!

I am required to purchase this book for a class. I know there is no stopping the major textbook publishers from taking advantage of starving students by charging rapacious prices, but this book is published by the instructor. Has he no shame?! AND he publishes a "new" edition every year, so there is no buy-back and no used copies! Is he in education to educate or to make money at the detriment of his students?!

Microservices architecture is a style of software architecture. As the name suggests, microservicess refers to small services. For a large implementation, this means breaking the system into really small, independent services. Alternative to monolithic architecture (where the entire system is considered as a single big, interwoven segment), microservices approach is getting more and more popular with large, complex applications that have a very long lifecycle, which require changes at regular intervals. Microservices approach allows this type of changes with ease as only a part of the system undergoes changes and change control is easy.

An example of such large system can be an online store―includes user interface, managing product catalog, processing orders, managing customer's account. In a microservices architecture each of these tasks will be divided and into smaller services. Also, these services will be further broken down into independent services―for user interface, there will be separate services for input, output, search bar management, and so on. Similarly, all other tasks can be divided in very small and simple services.

Extremely disappointing

Very, very disappointing. I was looking forward to an in-depth look at building microservices in Node, using Seneca, Docker and other technologies. This book did absolutely nothing to further my knowledge of those technologies and amounted to little more than a complete waste of time. The early sections discussed Seneca and PM2, but the examples were very weak and the author kept changing the Seneca.add(xxx) signature without explanation. The small section on pattern matching and Patrun was atrocious. I tried to plow through chapters one and two three times to no avail. I was left simply shaking my head.

The most important section, to my thinking, was the tutorial: called "Writing your First Microservice in Node.js". This is where I usually replicate the code presented by the author as I read along - hence it's learning importance. But the author doesn't even tell us how to set up the project environment! He immediately begins with this Seneca code without the first reference to the dependency requirements, installations and set-up. Unbelievable. The rest of the book, regarding testing and monitoring, fares no better. The Docker section is woefully inadequate, although considering the scope of Docker, some compromises should be expected.

The author says throughout that his book will not make the reader an expert, but should offer a good amount of familiarity. It does neither.

This could very well be the worst software book that I have ever purchased. And I have purchased more than a few.

Leaves Too Much to Be Desired

This book is for those with some experience with Node and Express already, but that's the big problem with a lot of tech books like this one. The author doesn't provide enough depth for the beginner and yet spends plenty of time on writing tests for newbies. He teaches us how to use Seneca but seems to forget to include an example of testing Seneca. He spends the whole time giving us the basic theory of everything but provides no depth. It seems like he's new to Seneca, just like us.

I'm rating this 3 stars because there aren't a lot of resources for learning Seneca. (There's a great Nodeschool tutorial, though. Make sure to check that out.) If we had a few more competing guides, I'd lower my rating to one star. It's not worth the $40 it's listed on Amazon for. If you really need this book, get it direct from Pakt.
