Bought it for my sister because it is a consolidated source of information

I did not give it 5 stars because after following it, we expected good results. Unfortunately, my sister's bone loss continues. Several doctors did concur in the use of Strontium as a "must" in osteoporosis therapy along with Vit D3 and K2 (not K1). I believe this strategy has slowed the bone loss but not stopped it. We just learned that there is a blood test to show bone loss which is even better than the dexa scan which just provides a baseline of bone density. Hence, you need both measurements I think. We are also trying out a product similar to Power Plate that has shown some benefit in building back bone. So this book probably needs to be updated with the new developments to get the 5 stars. The book is a great start for anyone with an osteoporosis diagnosis because it helps educate people on alternative options to the prescription drugs which have terrifying side effects in 10% of users. Imagine losing your jaw or breaking your femur? Those Rx treatments expose you to risks that to me, are even worse than the disease. When I asked the doctor if he was willing to take a Rx drug that might cause him to lose his entire jaw or break his femur, would he take it and the doctor responded "no". He said he would look for alternatives. And yet, he was more than willing to prescribe it for his patients. Don't trust your doctor on this one - find out the facts for yourself! Strontium, Vit D3 and K2 is a great strategy that will help "slow" bone loss. Strontium builds bone that is strong whereas biphosphid drugs build weak bones that are more likely to break. Get the facts. This book is a good start.

Strongly recommended along with 2 other titles on bone health

Bought this for my wife, whose bone density test last time was surprising. Very good solid book, not a doctor or researcher herself, but she refers to good research and puts it all together into a nice, coherent, well-organized, well-written, well-thought out book. She convinced me that I should get a bone density test, myself, citing the numbers of men who suffer fractures in their 60s and 70s. She has strong opinions against using the pharmaceutical drugs normally prescribed and gives convincing arguments for avoiding them. She goes into which nutrients and supplements are most helpful in countering bone loss and what kinds of exercises. These include very specific data and arguments that are sound and valid and worth reading about and considering. I think it's important to also read other books on the same subject before deciding on a final course of action, so I purchased two others for my wife (Dr. Lani's No Nonsense Bone Health Guide and The Complete Book of Bone Health by D. Schneider) and these are also great reads for health-related books and very informative, and have a lot of info not in Pizzorno's book that help balance out and add to what we learned here. My wife and I are both long-time health geeks who have a huge library of books on nutrition, health, exercise, etc. and have tried and experimented with many of the ideas we've learned about with many good results and few bad ones. This and the other 2 books I mentioned are all worthwhile and compare favorably to most health related books out there. I would recommend them and we will no doubt hang onto them for some time.

The case against Bisphosphonates in Osteoperosis.

This book SHOULD be read by everyone facing the "antique" category, and WOMEN in their 20's NOT til your life is destroyed by Osteoporosis do you realize the price you pay for little things later in life like pop and milkshakes.

This book was bought just as my wife was prescribed Bisphosphonates - after a fractured disk - her entire bone history was mishandled because, REALLY, medical community seems to HAVE no non-prescription way to handle this. As our Pharmacist says - its all we have. Our Chiropractor - who by the way, found the osteopenia that everyone else had missed, and in the FIRST visit about 5 years ago - MY urologist, another well-known pharmacist I heard speak, and OTHERS, have all said basically the same thing - that bisphosphonate treatment is almost worse than the disease itself; and OVER time it may well be.

One quote from a researcher in the book, about this drug "Why would ANYONE prescribe this?"

There is an additional wealth of information as well - diet, etc that is NOT new to us. WE have a gym at home - my wife uses it maybe 10 hours a week. She eats carefully.

Rather than the drug prescribed which is supposed to MAINTAIN your bone density we went looking for ways to INCREASE bone density. The book has a number of suggestions - we were already taking one of them when we bought the book. We asked her doctor about it when the prescription was given but she was unaware of alternatives. There are OTHER suppliments on the market that may be even MORE aggressive in restoring bone health, but we were comfortable with our choice.

It's my wife that's been reading it, but the info I get across the table is that she thinks its a goldmine of information.

The author, does, however, ignore the existence of pork. WE eat a lot of it. So the nutritional value info is missing in her charts.

BUT that does NOTHING to invalidate the research. Its a "full marks" book for us.

About the Author
The late Kara Tippetts was the author of The Hardest Peace (winner of the 2015 Christian Book Award® in the Inspiration category) and blogged faithfully at mundanefaithfulness.com. Cancer was only a part of Kara’s story. Her real fight was to truly live while facing a crushing reality. Since her death in March 2015, her husband, Jason, is parenting their four children and leading the church they founded in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Unexpected

I started reading " the Hardest Peace" yesterday afternoon and rarely put it down until I finished it this a.m. Now a little background. I have been following Kara's blog for awhile. When she was here in WNC, her once hometown in the Blue Ridge, Appalachian Mtns., I attended her conference. I purposely didn't buy the book as I thought," I've heard her speak, followed her blog. This will be just another book to languish on my dusty bookshelves." Nay Nay, Nannette, I was wrong. I felt a strong urge last week to read this and also purchase one for a friend who personally knew Kara. The book is, objectively, a good read and much more. Of course, as you would surmise from Kara's background based, it is based on Christian teachings. If you are not a Christian or have had a rocky road with Christianity, please don't let that you prevent you from reading this book . This is a voice "in the wilderness" in my multitude of opinions. This is a raw and utterly transparent heart speaking to mothers, wives, women, men and husbands who at anytime experience the loneliness of the human condition......Truly, I was astonished at what I read.

God's story of grace and love written throughout the beautiful life of Kara Tippetts

The Hardest Peace is a must read for everyone. This is not another ‘cancer’ story. This is God’s story of grace and love written throughout the life of Kara Tippetts. It is a story that will not only touch your heart, but cause you to begin to look at your own life’s story through the lens of God’s unfailing love.

Through Kara’s beautiful telling of God’s faithfulness in the hard story for her life, she shows us the importance of embracing God’s calling in our life; letting go of the ‘idol’ image we have created of what our life should look like and trust Him.

She demonstrations the importance of showing BIG love in small, every day moments like folding laundry for her kids, snuggling tight to read a bedtime story or time spent across from her spouse with a good cup of coffee. It all matters. Every. Single. Moment.

Kara shares her hurts, fears and impossibly difficult moments with such love and grace that it moves us to begin to be honest about our own hard that we often want to keep hidden.

This book is a gift

The Hardest Peace is Kara's story from start to present. She gives us a snapshot of the messy of her life prior to faith. She introduces us to her husband and their story. She lets us peek in on her four children and the wonder of them in her life. She brings us to Colorado Springs from North Carolina and we hear of how tough moving to Colorado was from day one. She talks about the life she and Jason thought they were going to live and the life they have had to accept. She is candid about the life her family will live without her and how she is trying to prepare all of them for that day and time. Kara is dying. The cancer is not going to turn back and retreat at this point. All treatments are to buy as much time as possible. Just a few weeks ago she shaved her head for the second and last time. Kara knows she will die bald. The treatments ensure that.
Kara shares from a place of deep peace and grace. She can do so because of the big love she has experienced in Christ. She is thoughtful in her story and she invites the reader in with some questions at the end of each chapter. She doesn't want just people who have cancer, for example, to read this book. She claims, and I agree, that this book is for anyone who has experienced, is experiencing, or will experience hard. Well, that's everyone. We cannot escape the hard of life, the sharp and rough edges of people and circumstances. We cannot escape it but we can have peace, hard peace, in the midst of it. Unless you have walked through hard with peace you can't speak with any authority on it. You have to experience it to share it honestly and without cliches. Kara has the authority to show us and tell us that it is possible to have hard peace when life isn't so gentle. She has been well equipped to speak on this topic.
Kara's book, The Hardest Peace, is a gift for the reader. The message Kara has lived to share is for anyone who has faced hard and that is each of us.

Wonderful book, well written, perfect size and makes nursing research easier!

This is a great book, the information is clear, easy to read and helps nursing research make more sense. It is a good size not too big or too small which is great because my other nursing books are huge! This book will give you a clear view of evidenced-based nursing practices.

I received an access code only, despite using the textbook ISBN and the listing stating it was a "paperback" weighing over 1 lb. I received a card with a code on it, not the book. When I worked with Amazon on a return, the return page gave me problems and customer service was also very difficult (sent me a return slip for a different item, promised a refund that never came, was very distracted and slow...). Can't rate a book I didn't receive.

Other characters, such as a wickedly beautiful other woman and a fop, are excellent, as is the author's attention to the social conerns of the times. A high degree of sensuality keeps sparks flying in Lane's first Regency. Lane lives in San Jose, California.

Portrait of a disfunctional marriage

My first experience with Allison Lane (The Beleaguered Earl) was a disappointment for the book was so full of flaws that I was reluctant to try again. I am pleased to say that I was very much surprised with The Rake's Rainbow and recommend it highly.
The story of The Hon Thomas Mannering and Miss Caroline Cummings is not an easy read. If you like your regencies lite 'n' fluffy, then this book is not for you. It is dark, distressing and depressing but, ultimately, full of hope and triumph against what seem to be pretty overwhelming odds.
Thomas and Caroline marry in order to escape - for her poverty and governessing and for him in order to gain an inheritance. Thomas had become ensnared by Alicia - a heartless, fickle nymphomaniac who strings him along never intending to marry an earl's mere second son. He slips into a deep depression, drinking and gambling and nearly slipping over the edge into madness.
Caroline is the stronger of the two for, with astute insight into human nature, she is able to save him by letting matters run their course, never giving up hope that the man she sees beneath the hopeless despair is worth nurturing and loving. Some might say she is a bit of a sacrificial lamb but, within the social context of the times, she did what she had to in times when divorce was virtually impossible. The descriptions of her meeting Thomas's family for the first time and finding her way through the Season were excellent for she does it without the support of her husband who, by this time, is so depressed that he ignores her completely.
I liked the way the author developed Thomas's family; each member, particularly his father, the Earl of Marchgate and his foppish but sweet elder brother, had a significant role to play in the development of the story.
There is a great deal of pain, angst and high emotion in this story. Tempers flare, characters sometimes act against their own best intentions and the hero is flawed but honourable. The heroine is strong but tender and loving. Sometimes the reader will want to point a pistol at Thomas and at others will want to love him - for this story is a real emotional roller coaster.
I will read another of Allison Lane's books to see if my first experience was atypical. It's just too bad she did not meet in The Beleaguered Earl the exceptionally high standards that she set with The Rake's Rainbow. It was very well done; polished prose and obvious careful research gives it a very authentic air. Her depiction of the Season, the Ton and marriage and family life in the Regency era were very good and most realistic.

This hero is NO hero

The "hero": selfish, mean, cheater, weak in character, whiny, self-pity (why is my life so bad, woe is me - let me abuse someone else because I'm too lazy and selfish to care of my own life).

The heroine - liked her for the most part but she put up with his abuse (verbal and emotional) and then when he did have his about-face she made it too easy on him. She didn't require he do anything to atone for his abuse of her.

Heroine is too good for undeserving hero

Mannering, the novel's supposed hero, is so unappealing and thickheaded that it defies even romance novel logic that are spunky heroine should fall in love with him. Mannering spends the entire novel in love with another woman and treats the loveable heroine, who is his wife, so badly that you actually hope the author kills him so our heroine could find a worthy mate. Not a noteworthy book.

It asumes that you know your fundamentals and then dives into sound radiation from surfalces, hollow bodies etc. Overall the book is a good reference for someone with acoustics background; if you need to learn acoustics or refresh yourself, get Blackstocks book.
