Carbon copy of men's edition, but without the great pants

I bought Classic Tailoring Techniques: A Construction Guide for Men's Wear first. It's great. The text teaches you how to make beautifully tailored garments. I wanted to see those techniques specifically for women's jackets, trousers, and skirts so I bought this edition. Except for the section on pants and skirts, the text is identical in both books. The sections on women's pants and skirts is like anything you'd find in a commercial pattern instruction sheet - nothing special at all. Couture techniques for making beautifully tailored pants for women are not described or even hinted at in this book. Actually, it's not the fault of the author -- tailoring techniques are actually designed for men's clothing. Couture techniques are essentially for women's clothing. If you want to learn to make tailored jackets (men's or women's), either book gives the same instructions. For tailored trousers, use the men's book. For women's skirts, see Couture Sewing Techniques by Claire B. Shaeffer. (Actually, Claire Shaeffer's Vogue patterns for jackets and trousers are probably a better purchase than this book.)

Excellent Traditional Tailoring Techniques

I found this book and the men's wear companion to be extremely informative and one of the best guides around for learning how to create a tailored garment using the traditional techniques as opposed to the "speed" tailoring that is so popular. There are differences in men's and women's jackets which each book illustrates respectively. Also, the women's book includes chapters on skirts and pants. My disappointment is that neither book included instruction on the various types of coats and raincoats with zip/button-out linings. Coats are not just long jackets; there are differences in construction techniques. I also think that there should have been a little more clarification of some things. For instance, it took me a while to realize that silk-finished thread was actually Mettler's silk-finish cotton thread and not a type of silk thread. A search of the internet provided the answer. Minor gripes in comparison to the knowledge to be gained therein by those who want to make couture-quality garments.

Essential Guide to Ladies' Classic Tailoring

Along with it's companion on classic tailor for men's wear, this book is absolutely essential reading, for it is an absolute classic in terms of the way the book deals step-by-step with the practical making up of a coat and skirt.

It must be clarified that it is complete and utter nonsense that the methods for tailoring women's coats described here is identical to the companion men's tailoring book. Whoever thinks that has clearly neither read this book, nor it's companion. The techniques outlined are totally different, from the shape of the canvas, the panels being canvassed or mounted/underlayed, and even the layers forming the chest piece. There are even sections dealing with a coat with separately cut skirt, as well as discussions about paneled jackets. Obviously, neither of these are found in the men's tailoring edition. The details on how to construct a coat, or skirt are far beyond the instructions found inside a commercial pattern. Yes, the skirt is a plain tailor's skirt rather than a fancier dressmaker's skirt, but this is what the book is about: classic custom/bespoke tailoring a skirt as part of a suit, not couture style dressmaking.

About the Author
PETER GANEA, Dr. phil., studied Japanese studies, Chinese studies and economics at the Universities of Munich and Hokkaido. He has been co-head of the Asian Department of the Max Planck Institute for Patent, Copyright and Competition Law in Munich since 2000.

Christopher Heath (1964) studied law at the Universities of Konstanz, Edinburgh and the LSE. He lived and worked in Japan for three years, and between 1992 and 2005 headed the Asian Department of the Max-Planck-Institute for Patent, Copyright and Competition Law in Munich. Christopher Heath, who wrote his PhD thesis on Japanese unfair competition prevention law, is a Member of the Boards of Appeal at the European Patent Office in Munich, co-editor of IIC and editor of the Max Planck Institute s Asian Intellectual Property Series published by Kluwer Law International.

I knew the moment I introduced Adaira and Roark in�Highlander's Hope they'd have to have their own story.�I thought I knew exactly what their romance would entail, but as with all my books, they surprised me in several ways.�

Both Adaira and Roark are complex people with undeniable flaws. But then, real people are flawed too, aren't we?�

The dachshund, Kiki, introduced in�The Earl's Enticement�is named after a dachshund I lost in October 2012 after she was poisoned from a Waggin Tail chicken jerky treat. I wanted Kiki to live on in mortality, and so I wrote her into the story.�
�
There's another character, seemingly unimportant in the story's entirety, who was special to me too. Clara, the maid Adaira meets at Roark's ball has disfigured fingers. I modeled her disability after my great-grandmother. The only digits not deformed on Great Grandma Clara's (Yes, her name was really Clara) hands were her thumbs. The rest of her fingers were webbed together and ended at the first knuckle. Still, she was a very successful milliner.�

One of the Great Books on Creative Problem Solving

I love and collect books on creativity and problem solving. One of my favorites is Dr. Linda Seger's, Making a Good Writer Great: A Creative Workbook for Screenwriters. The title, unfortunately, is too narrow for its own good. It should be: Unleashing Your Creative Genius: Screenwriting as a Metaphor for World Peace...or something just as ostentatious. I'm serious. First, using Linda's techniques just replace all forms of the term "writer" for whatever job you're in: "engineer," "teacher," "mother," "assembler," "unemployed," or "politician." (On second thought, strike that last example.) Second, insert YOURSELF as the protagonist of YOUR PERSONAL story. Third, pick the problem you're having difficulty solving. And finally, using Linda's techniques and exercises creatively think your way to a solution just as you would the fictional character in a story. The problems that face all of us--writer, repressed child, or okay, even world leader--can be solved by using Linda's 12-step program. Here they are in my own words. 1. Discover your mission (or goal). 2. Articulate your values. 3. List the obstacles. 4. Plot turning points around the obstacles. 5. Stick to your passions. 6. Master your powers of observation. 7. Attach meaning to your experiences. 8. Accept your flaws as reasons to persevere. 9. Leverage the opposing forces. 10. Purpose to change the world. 11. Ask God for supernatural inspiration. And 12. Use feedback to ever improve. Linda's book is a winning tool for everyone...including writers.

break through writer's block

Linda Seger offers a number of ways to re-start the creative process; if only one of them works for you, the book is worth it.
Just reading through the exercises in this book was enough to get me through a serious case of writer's block. She includes an entire chapter on tapping into your religious/spiritual side to flesh out characters and deepen plot, but don't worry: If that won't work for you, she suggests skipping ahead -- there are plenty more idea-provoking suggestions to come.
It's a resource to turn to again and again, whenever a dead end looms.

500 years into the future Earth has drastic problems. Another few years and she was be considered uninhabitable. Help comes in the form of an alien race known as the Atblorians.
The Atblorians need males and females of a different race to mate with because of a virus that has left their kind unable to reproduce with each other. The aliens offer to help heal Earth in exchange for volunteers to be mates.

Matilda doesn't have much to lose and volunteers to be a "Space-Ordered-Bride". When she arrives on Atblora, she meets her mate for the first time and is shocked to find out he doesn't want her! What is she going to do? There's nothing back on Earth for her and her new life is already a disaster. Unfortunately, she is forced to go with the man named Adike and must live with him until other arrangements can be made. But, and invading enemy known as the Wealhex have set their targets on Atblora and the one man she wants to get to know so desperately.

Adike is a retired Atblorian soldier. Retired only because he was forced by the council after his near death on a small planet that cost the lives of many of his men. Summoned to pick up a package, Adike realizes he has been fooled into taking an unwanted mate. He does his best to let her know he doesn't want her and that she wouldn't be staying for long at his home. His plans go wrong when the Wealhex attack his planet, sending him and Matilda on a run for their lives. They have to get to the Docking Bay so Adike can join in the fight to rid Atblora of the enemy. Adike lives with the guilt of his soldiers' deaths and blames himself for surviving. Can Matilda help him see the error of his ways and heal him?

Along the way, the pair will fight to survive and get to know each other better. Feelings will change as they depend on each other more and more.

Could've Been Really Good With A Decent Editor...

The basic storyline is actually pretty interesting and would have grabbed my attention for additional books in the series. But after reading my first book by Ms. Pond, I can't say that I would be interested in others. If you are going to charge over the standard $0.99 for a basic self-published story, the reader has the right to expect some professionalism. However this book is filled with mistakes that any decent editor would have caught before you published. Just having someone else read the story could have highlighted the numerous misspelled and outright missing words. Then maybe the story flow would not have been disrupted because you have to re-read a sentence over and over again to make sure you have the right meaning.

I could have dealt with the grammar mistakes if not for the content issues as well. An alien, 500 years in the future, who has not spent time around humans from Earth, would not use 21st century American catchphrases like "awesome." There were other instances. The most predominantly used was the "f***" word. If Adike just used this during the sex scenes you could explain it with the translator. By the way, thanks for that "explainer," even though it took you 3/4's of the book to explain how Tilly was able to understand Adike and all of the other aliens around her. But Adike used his American catchphrases in private. An alien wouldn't do this. Tilley too seemed to be out of sync with her character 500 years in the future. She was just too amazed with the alien technology that should have been routine. Why is she so amazed by the lack of wheels on things? She traveled by spaceship to another galaxy but is agog over a skateboard without wheels.

Then there were the instances where details were added that had nothing to do with the action going on at the time. For example, right in the middle of a battle scene, Ms. Pond decided to describe the plants and animals in the area. Did it have any bearing on the story? No. So who cares?

Each of these mistakes and inconsistencies disrupted the story for me. A good story flows continuously. It may take you around bends or sudden drops. But it still flows evenly. A good editor would have helped discover the impediments in the story to save it. As is, "Saving Adike" is an interesting idea that never reached its full potential.

I really enjoy every one of Rebecca Lorino Pond's books and this one is no exception! This love story is about a woman who volunteers to leave a dying Earth to come to another planet as a bride. She hopes for love and a better life. The planet she goes to is having a problem with infertility, so humans are the key to avoiding extinction. The man she is earmarked for is a disillusioned, bitter war hero has been forced to retire to a farm after a battle that went wrong. The story centers around the heroine who wants to stay with him and the hero, who insists he wants nothing to do with her. Their relationship is brought into clarity when sudden danger of an enemy alien force invades their planet. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good love story!

This galaxy ain't big enough for the two of us!

I actually liked this book very well for the most part. Lots of grammatical mistakes, however, and weak plot points. I liked the characters and I wanted to find out what happened to them, so I gave this 4 stars, because I get so tired of the shallow "wham, bam, thank you earther ma'am." About the Author
Pam Locker is the subject leader for Design for Exhibition and Museums at the University of Lincoln. She has worked as a museum and exhibition designer and consultant for a range of projects and organisations in Britain and Europe. As a Principal Teaching Fellow she has a special interest in the use of communication design in education. She has developed an online resource, 'Pencils and Pixels,' that uses filmed demonstrations to teach design students about drawing as a means of communication. Pam is a member of the Chartered Society of Designers and holds Professional Membership of the Higher Education Academy FHEA.

If you are a junior designer or brand new to exhibition design, then this book may be helpful, but I was expecting a little more substance. If you have more experience, then this is not the book for you. Some other books in the "basics" series have taken a bit of a deeper dive, but this one is definitely basic.

I gave it 3 stars because it's not a bad book, it just didn't meet my needs. This is a decent intro to the practice, but I don't recommend if you are not a beginner.

Students perspective

The book itself, is visually pleasing. It's use of colour and layout meant that it was easy to navigate through the book, not being bored by endless amounts of text. The book communicates a better understanding of the complexity in exhibition design. It explains thoroughly the different aspects of exhibition design, and the way it affects the world, and how dependant on the size and importance of the exhibition it can be used for commercial and even cultural purposes.

Reading through the book there were many examples of exhibitions or expo's, however it most cases it would only simply mention the name of the exhibition, and re frame from going into further detail. It would of also been beneficial to include more diagrams, of previous exhibitions, precedent that's already available, with various sections and plans including the scale on each drawing.

Instead of this book providing students like me with detailed precedents, of various exhibitions it simply explains all of the components of this form of design. Breaking it down and explaining the individual features and what have an effect on the overall design of an exhibition space. Which is very good for people who are trying to grasp the concept of expo design, as it explores the fundamental topics with clear diagrams and includes various examples of work from both students and professionals work.

Overall its a good buy for students, it's the first platform I would use to help in understanding and comprehending the theoretical designing of exhibitions.
