Nice writeup on character and story development

[[VIDEOID:32671071]]The Art of Pocahontas is an oversized art book with huge image prints and large typesetting fonts.

The content is split into the following categories: Preproduction and Concept Art, Story, Charater Development and Animation, Layouts and Backgrounds, Effects and Colors.

Pocahontas is actually a Native American woman who married an Englishman John Rolfe way back in 1595. You can read more on the real Pocahontas on wikipedia.

Much of the challenge in making this movie is the balancing of the story, myth and legend. There's great writeup in this book on how scenes were adjusted to best convey themes while entertaining audiences.

There are over 400 colour and black-and-white illustrations in the book. Most of the scenes and characters are captioned by the story artists, examining the character motivations and story arcs. These are incredibly detailed and is what breathes life into the characters. Reading those captions is my favourite part of the book.

In the layout and background section, the descriptions explain how compositions work in the scenes to complement stories. It's educational, with timeless principles applied and explained.

This book really gives a good sense of the incredible amount of work done behind the scenes to create the animated movie. It's a very interesting as well as an enlightening read.

Weak parts, but worth taking a look at.

The only thing holding this book together is the easy way it flows. In the tradition of other Disney "Making of..." books, it follows the format of each animation process from concept to script to storyboard to animation. Its interesting, but at times bogs down some nice visuals. Not all the visuals are great, though. The pre-production art seems weak and cliche like the drawings of pilgrims and Indians you remember as a kid. Only in the animation chapters does it pick up, particularly the work of Glen Keane. As chief animator of the title character, his storyboards and animation seem the most inspired and studied. Other character designs seem less bold against Disney's first eco-feminist heroine who paved the way for post-feminist heroines like Esmeralda from Hunchback and Meg from Hercules. The book not unnique in its execution or format, but its worth taking a look at to compare with other films and books and to see the evolution of the thought process of great Disney animators like Keane and Ruben Aquino. And of course it has its share of Disney we-are-doing-this-and-no-one-else-can attitude.

Don't let the small size of "The Art of Pocahontas"fool you; the authors have crammed the 5.5" by 4.5" book with loads of colorful artwork and interesting insights into the recent Disney masterpiece.

"The Art of Pocahontas" traces the creation of the film from conception to completion, including wonderful reproductions of concept sketches, background paintings, layout drawings and final animation art. The 189 pages of this small volume contain over 400 color and black-and-white illustrations.

The text was written by Stephen Rebello, an editor of "Movieline" and author of "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of 'Psycho.'" He provides many insights into the collaborative and creative process behind the making of "Pocahontas."

Well written, great setting

I enjoyed a lot of things about this book: it is extremely well-written and the gorgeous setting really pops out of the pages. The secondary characters (especially Aisha, the daughter) are really well done. The only reason I give this book three stars instead of 4 is that the main characters simply didn't appeal to me. Sam the heroine is a difficult woman with her faults and I found it hard to warm up to her. However, I can imagine that readers who enjoy character studies might like seeing her development not only throughout this book, but over the series since she appeared in Book 1 also.

Another wonderful trip to River’s Sigh B&B.

This is book 2 in the River’s Sigh B&B series but it can be read as a stand-alone; there is no cliffhanger and there is an HEA. For maximum enjoyment, though, you might want to read Wedding Bands first as it will give you some background on the secondary characters in this story. I loved Wedding Bands and couldn’t wait to read this story but I had to wait because writers just can’t write as fast as I can read. LOL I wasn’t disappointed and this story was worth the wait.

As the book opens, Samantha (Sam) is struggling to come to terms with meeting the daughter given up for adoption 17 years ago so that she could have a better life than Sam was in a position to provide. Now Aisha is in the same boat that Sam was, pregnant with the baby’s father nowhere around. And Aisha has questions that she wants Sam to answer.

Charles (Charlie) is Aisha’s adoptive father; his wife, Maureen (Mo), died a few years ago. He’s a writer who has lost his muse and hasn’t written anything new since his wife died. He’s been given one final extension on his publishing contract; he must finish a new book within 6 months.

More of Sam and Charlie’s backstory unfolds throughout the book. Their first meeting isn’t really a good one. This is definitely not a case of love at first sight. Both Sam and Charlie have demons that haunt them. Charlie is afraid that Sam is trying to take his only remaining family from him. Sam just doesn’t want to get involved with anyone; the daughter she gave birth to or a man.

Ev Bishop weaves a moving and complex story. Her writing is wonderfully descriptive; you can see and feel what the characters see and feel. The path to Sam and Charlie’s HEA is a rocky one and the relationship that both of them have with Aisha encounters rough water.

Once again, Ev has written a book that contains a minimal amount of strong language. In real life there is cursing; a book completely free of it would be a bit unrealistic to me. She also manages to tell a wonderful love story without any graphic love scenes. I don’t mention these things because I object to them in books, but because I know some readers do. I love alpha males, billionaire stories, military heroes and erotic romance. Still, it’s a nice change to read a book that doesn’t need any of that to tell a great story. Ev’s characters seem like REAL people to me and I loved getting lost in in her writing.

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I was duly impressed with her style and content. In this book, Ms Bishop has captured the insecurities some women have when they find themselves pregnant and alone, and how this can affect their lives, both at that time and in the future. The important lesson she has gifted us with is that there should always be hope that we will find someone worth loving and to have love for us somewhere along the way.
The characters she has portrayed are strong and down to earth, and most of all, real.
This is a wonderful love story about a woman who, to all around her, is cold and a loner, yet underneath all of that, is simply a young girl that has been hurt in many ways and doing her best to cope with all of her pain in the only way she knows how. Sam slowly allows her heart to feel everything she has yearned for but was always too afraid to let it happen. Charlie, after loosing his wife more than three years ago, still mourns his loss, but also wishes to leave the feeling of loneliness behind and open his heart to another, collides with Sam in more ways than one. Together, they discover many things about themselves that they dismissed in order to protect their hearts, only to find that if they open up and let their hearts feel, maybe there might be a future full of all of their desires after all.
I loved this book. If you are looking for a heartfelt love story, this is definitely one you should read. You won't be disappointed! I know I wasn't.

Thought Provoking

Thomas O. Mills, in an earlier book titled “The Truth”, explains how he got to know and learn about the Hopi traditions and wisdom. In this new book, he again continues with his interpretation of some of the Hopi esoteric knowledge for a quick and easy understanding of it. He then builds ones understanding to the point where he presents a timeline for mankind and makes it relevant to what humanity may be facing today. I enjoyed how he has distilled and deciphered this culture’s wisdom into very understandable terms and in the process possibly added clarity to some of the mysteries of other ancient cultures/sites. And I found this presentation fascinating and would encourage anyone, who is interested in thought provoking concepts, to take this informative adventure. The book is short but I believe the presentation is well developed.

Interesting and likely true

Thomas Mills has written and interesting book with a very simple and likely true analysis about where East was and mapped on various pyramids and sacred sites. I would suggest reading his other book "The Book of Truth" before this book. My only wish is that this book "Stonehenge If This Was East" was a little longer it is short and to the point. So maybe Thomas will write a little more in another book and expand a little if he gets support with these two books. Thanks to him for stepping out and making an effort to share what he has learned.

Thomas O. Mills has done it again. After reading his last book and thoroughly enjoying it, i decided to pick up his latest effort, "Stonehenge- If This Was East." This book draws striking parallels between Stonehenge, ancient Egypt, the Hopis, and several other ancient cultures from around the world, to uncover a hidden truth about our planet. While Tom is fantastic at connecting the dots, I think his real message here is an environmental one. If you consider yourself a truth seeker in any way shape or form this book is for you.

About the Author
Mary Zimmerman's credits as an adapter and a director include Metamorphoses (2002), The Arabian Nights (2005), and Journey to the West (forthcoming) all available from Northwestern University Press, as well as Eleven Rooms of Proust, and The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. Her work has been produced at the Lookingglass Theatre and Goodman Theatre of Chicago; on Broadway at Circle in the Square; in New York at Second Stage, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Manhattan Theatre Club; at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles; and at the McCarter, Berkeley Repertory, and Seattle Repertory as well as many other theaters around the country and abroad. The recipient of a Tony Award for directing for Metamorphoses and a MacArthur Fellowship, Zimmerman is a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University.

Astonishing

Zimmerman's onstage recreation of this text is a marvel. Having seen it staged in 2000, I finally contacted the author in 2014 and was delighted to find it had been published. The entire interpretation is brilliant, but the Sirens rise to the level of genius. Anyone with a theatrical bone in their* body will love this.

Breathtaking. Zimmerman is a genius. Only wish I could have seen it. See her work any chance you get. My students read it, and LOVED it (a lot more than the original text) and really got into acting it.
