Great story!!!

Book 10 in the Club Volare series with story of Luke Logan, very successful engineer, club Dom, and good friend to club owner Gavin has has been attracted to one of Gavin's old college friend Charlene Bastien for a number of years. Charlene, owns a restaurant, great cook, very organized, and used her inheritance for a charity that she handles, submissive but not currently clubbing directly due to her nasty ex husband Jimmy. Charlene has had a terrible childhood with neither parent being there for her, she also married a completely rotten Dom, who was abusive both mentally and as well as physically, also cheated on her numerous times and told nothing but lies, and was a drunk. Therefore Charlene has major Trust issues with everyone including her friends as when she was with Jimmy the friends they had then betrayed her big time just like Jimmy and her parents. She has new friends now through her connection with Gavin but still is unable to have complete trust and definitely wants no committed relationship again with a Dom or another husband. Luke has his own childhood issues that he is dealing with in that he sees none of his family because of things that occurred in his past, refuses to discuss it and also wants absolutely no committed relationship for a wife ever. Yet the attraction between these two is like gasoline and a lit match whenever they are anywhere close to each other. Add into this dynamic the douche bag ex comes back into the picture to make Charlene's life a living hell as well as try to ruin Olivia and Gavin's wedding that Charlene is planning for them. Great story with a lot of constant action. I totally recommend this whole series as I have enjoyed every book so far and cannot wait for Holt and Simone's story coming next.

Charlene is many things, most of all she is a sexual submissive. She has a painfully past and a tyrant for an ex husband. Luke Logan see the beautiful woman who is smart,submissive and ,caring and a perfect complement to his inner Dom. Can he offer her only half of himself? Each of these people have problems,and painful pasts. We also see something beautiful happen to Gavin and Olivia. If you loved New York , Los Angeles... you will definitely love New Orleans! More sexy doms and the submissive's who bring them to their knees.

Benko and Hochberg revise a classic

I have received literally dozens of requests to review this book.

I have owned this book for close to (or over) a year, I wanted to spend a little time looking at it, it is a huge volume - there is much material here to ponder and analyze. At over 600 pages, I don't think that the word, "massive" is out of place.

Before you go any further ... if you are seriously considering purchasing this book ... you definitely should go to IM J. Silman's web site and read IM Anthony Saidy's book review. It is detailed, thorough, and very comprehensive.

Here is my two cents worth, and I will try to be as brief as possible.

GM R. Fine wrote the original book in about 4-6 months, the world's endgame experts did not believe that this feat could be accomplished in ten years!!! (A truly Herculean feat - by one of the greatest American players and writers, ever!) Fine managed this trick without computers, databases, etc. Naturally many errors were eventually discovered.

Benko and Hochberg took it upon themselves to update this work; it was sadly in need of a revision. Not only to correct all the mistakes, but to change the book to from the old - now completely outdated E.S.D.N. - to the more modern algebraic notation.

I agree with Saidy, this work is a step in the right direction ... but - - -

1. I found dozens of errors, despite the fact that the authors promised us a book that was meticulously checked by computers and the great Pal Benko. (My current volume already has dozens of corrections and notes in the margins, and about 50-to-75 bookmarks for places that I want to go back and analyze even further - sometime in the future.)

2. Many times, important endgames from the period since this book was originally written, (post-1941); have been completely ignored.

3. Many basic reference works, like "The Encyclopedia of Chess Endings," (by the same guys who print the INFORMANTS); were obviously not even consulted; many endings could have been updated or corrected simply by a careful review of these books.

4. Many endgames have 'dual' solutions. These have been completely ignored.

5. The current authors did not attempt to explain the basic ideas of many of the newer examples that were added, Fine often went to great lengths to do this.

6. Benko's additions/replacements of his own bizarre problems often set my teeth on edge. Fine's original volume only had positions that were VERY practical or were culled from actual games. Benko's weird additions look out of place in this book; I much prefer many of the original positions - even with their many mistakes.

Having said all this, you might think I hated this book, but I don't. I give it four stars and a HIGH recommendation. ANY player who considers themselves a serious student of the game - regardless of their rating - must purchase this book. ALL correspondence players will find this volume a true God-send when trying to analyze or learn a difficult ending.

Let us just hope that the next set of authors that take a whack at this - start from scratch ... and are capable of using a computer and have the necessary reference books on hand. This book is good, and a tremendous work ... but falls far short of being great or the type of work that it aspired to be ... or even should have been!

This book is NOT a learning tool. It is for more experienced players with a need to refer to certain endgame positions. Players new to endgame study should AVOID this tome. I wish I had. When I was just an 1800 USCF player, I had access only to this dry, pedantic, boring, dictionary and hated endgame study for years after. I am rated 2300 USCF now, and I wouldn't wish my worst enemy use this book for improvement purposes. Unless, you really want to learn endgames the hard way. buy something else

a classic masterwork on chess endings

This is a great but also a difficult book. Because it deals with a very complex subject, moreover is not an approachable text for chess newbies, therefore I should not award it more than four stars-- it's not for all!
Yet this great marvel ought to be on the book shelf of any chess master! For having so many hundreds of pages of clear (and dry) examples in this book ; this has stood the test of time. Now it is revised, in-print and in the newer algebraic notation format. The couple of dozen errors which were unknowable to anyone before computer analysis of endgames was available have been ammended by Grandmaster Pal Benko.
Honestly I can think of easier endgame books, like Auerbach's 5 volume set (now available on a cd-rom by Convekta-dot-com a russian publishing house) or certainly the are simpler rook ending books such as Emm's work and simpler pawn-ending books like Fishbein's work. but Reuben Fine-- the greatest US contender for the world chess championship before RJ Fischer--the man Botvinnik (and the soviet system of chess) most worried about before he gave up chess for medicine-- knew his stuff better than the rest.
Don't ever try to read this kind of book straight on. Look at your own chess games. Look at the type of endings which you are playing right now. Then study those ending-types in Fine's taxonomy of endings via the book index. This method will make you fearless of the ending. You will more willing to play strategic chess with complex endings instead of rock'em sock'em blitz. You will enjoy longer time-controls. This kind of book can change a young man's chess game alot. But you have to put the work into this book to get that. So it's not for all players.

Well-researched novel will appeal to rabid NBA stats fans

Andy Glockner's book is a "behind the scenes look at the high stakes game of creating an NBA champion." It delves into the fairly recent evolution of statistics (big data analytics) and its impact on professional basketball. How is the NBA-- a league of big money and big outcomes -- using this potentially massive amount of data to its advantage? Is it the players, the coaches, the teams, the front offices looking to benefit? How can big data and statistics fit into the traditional paradigm of the NBA as we know it?

I nabbed an advanced copy of this book, because I'm a sports fan and a big NBA fan. I thought the book was going to take a look at the 2014/2015 season and how stats impacted it, but I don't feel that it exactly delivered on its promise. That's not to say it's not a good read. It's certainly enjoyable if you like basketball, particularly the NBA. If you're a fan of statistics and numbers related to your sports, you'll love the book, as it's chock full of data. In fact, so much that it reads like a term paper sometimes. My biggest issue, in fact, was that is was almost a little too dry and statistics heavy, with an outline that jumped around in organization, making it hard to follow and stay engaged. Still, the book is extremely well-researched and you'll pick up a lot of good tidbits to impress fellow sports fans.

Overall, it was amazing to read about the impact of statistics on the NBA and how what would take the video and tape guys hours (probably days ages ago) can now be compiled in seconds by companies with algorithms and computer programs. Glockner introduces to us to several of these firms, including SportsVU, and does a good job explaining their evolution. (Perhaps too good a job - it gets to be a bit much at times.)

Some of my other issues were that, at least in my ebook edition, some of the graphics were hard to read, as all the lines and charts were hard to read - the lines were basically all the same color.

To me, the book was best when Glockner mixed his use of stats with anecdotes and real stories. I'm not exactly sure billing it as a quest to find the most "perfected player" is true, or even a look at the 2014/2015 season, but the stories were fun. There's a short bit on University of Kentucky Coach Calipari's hire of Joel Justus in the analytics realm and how that led to UK's much talked about platoon system for one season - quite a fascinating portion of a chapter. Further, the Colorado State basketball program is a good anecdotal example use of SportsVU and is far less dry than the more stats heavy or less conversational chapters.

Again, the book also gets you thinking: just like any other advantage in sports, stats often help those programs with more money; for instance, the Duke Blue Devils being the only team able to use the SportsVU system in their practice facility (this stuck in my craw, being anti-Duke and all. Go 'Hoos!) It also talks about how young players are showing worse movement than ever (very scary). And, a lot of the book is mind boggling with its repercussions; for instance, a company at the combine is predicting player injuries before these kids are even in the NBA (leading to great questions about who gets that data, what do they do with it, what does it mean for the kids or the teams scouting them, etc.)

Glockner goes into the biomechanics pieces of stats, with some fun and fascinating bits weaved in. He discusses how the company P3 can tell how a player is "off" in his mechanics, for instance, with their amazing system of measurements. This leads to a great Phoenix Suns and Grant Hill anecdote and the resurrection of Grant's career (again, book had more pull to me when it was aligned with an actual team or player that made it seem more real).

The epilogue is what I thought the whole book was about (Golden State using stats to win), but was actually very brief (basically one bit about an assistant who subbed in someone). It's amazing story about how stats can alter an entire NBA finals, but goes out with a whimper.

Overall, it was a good book, but I confess I probably bumped my rating up to a 3-star simply due to my love of basketball. Some of the chapters just seem hodgepodge - as if a bunch of players were just thrown in to talk about stats with no rhyme or reason; it's interesting, but seems random and nonsensical. Are these the most perfected players we were promised? If so, it's not really made clear. The Kyle Korver story near the end of the book finally ties a lot of the book's themes together (analytics, P3, etc.) in a story form, which was interesting and compelling in its format and how I wish more of the book had been presented. Combine that with a little too many numbers for a casual sports fan and the jumping around in organization and there was definitely something lacking. Still, this well-researched novel will appeal to the rabid stats fans and those who want more history about how the burgeoning field of big data analytics is changing the NBA as we speak.

This book does an excellent job of illustrating the countless layers of analytics within the basketball world. Analytics influence the on-court product, but also prevent injuries and inform business decisions. Glockner's prose is always a pleasure to read.

Nick Corcodilos, the author of 'Ask the Headhunter', has taken job hunting to the next level!
Maybe I'm totally naive when it comes to job hunting (well, at least not anymore), but this book changed my entire mindset on the conventional methods of seeking employment. To cut directly to the chase....
THE NEGATIVES:
* Some of his writings get really redundant. He's trying to drive home a point, but too excessive.
* His method could leave you spending weeks if not months preparing and researching information just for one company; Especially, if you are changing careers or a recent college graduate seeking employment in an industry you're totally unfamiliar with.
THE POSITIVES:
* Easy to read. I like that!
* Will this book help you get the job you are seeking? - Without reservation nor hesitation, if you follow the method Nick has outlined, your probability of success is greatly enhanced. The real question is 'how could you not?' (beware of personnel jockeys)
* The 'added-value' to this book where the others leave off is simply the difference between SHOW & TELL in your 3rd grade elementary class (showing was always more interesting, huh?) Where the other books will TELL you how to get the job, Nick will SHOW you how to DEMONSTRATE your abilities to DO THE JOB in the interview.

not for everyone -- and that's what makes it so good

Nick Corcodilos runs a website called "Ask the Headhunter." I have never encountered so much valuable advice dispensed without a fee.
In this book, Nick explains why the traditional job hunt almost never works. Then he outlines an absolutely brilliant method of breaking away from the Human Resources machine and separating yourself from the herd of "cows" looking for jobs.
Best of all, almost nobody is going to do it! It is far too different and requires too much work for most people. Which means the few of us who follow his advice have that much more of an advantage.
Old way: Scan the help wanted ads, the internet job sites, register with a recruiting agency. Send out dozens, maybe hundreds, of resumes. All of which gets you into the Personnel Department, where people who do not understand the work you do scan through a checklist and try to find reasons to disqualify you. Even when you find a job that fits you perfectly, now you are one of perhaps a hundred would-be applicants.
Nick's way: Do some in-depth research to discover the companies you'd like to work for. (His advice: "Don't look for a job, look for a company.") Then ask yourself how you might become an "insider." Do you know anybody who works there? Can you find out who their customers are? Their vendors? He offers various ways of getting an inside track to speak directly to the person you would be working for -- not someone in Human Resources. Then when you meet, do the job right then and there! Show them how you work, how you think.
I read this book last week, and followed its suggestions: I did a good deal of research on target companies over the weekend, arranged a personal referral to the hiring manager (not the personnel department) of one of them, and have an appointment scheduled for next Thursday. Having done my homework, I already know what probelms the company is facing. When I get there, I'm going to steer the conversation toward that issue, and start working on that problem right then and there.
To this point, I am further along toward a job I really want with a company I REALLY want than I ever would have been the old way. All because of this book.

Job Hunting or Hiring: A Must Read!

As a Recruitment Professional, I can honestly say that this is the best guide for finding and getting the right job that I have ever read. Nick Corcodilos obviously knows his business and shares with the reader what hiring authorities really want from job candidates and what they are willing to give in return to the well-prepared and knowledgeable candidate. From personal experience, I received an offer of $15,000 more than I was expecting just by using the book's techniques. As a Recruitment Specialist for many years, I thought I knew it all, but even I learned some effective new techniques for getting the right job from this book. If you are job seeking, buying this book will be the best investment in your career that you could make!
