More erudite history and eminently readable scholarship from Yale Sinologist Spence (The Search for Modern China, 1990, etc.). Many of these essays and reviews, previously published in both scholarly and nonscholarly journals, were inspired by Western inquirers of yore like 16th-century Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci and novelist Andr‚ Malraux, both subjects of essays in an opening section entitled ``Crossing the Cultures.'' In ``Looking East: The Long View,'' Spence concedes that Western confusion about China began with accounts by Ricci and other missionaries, but, still, he relishes these reports' delicate balance and appreciation for culture. A second, scholarly and vigorous group of essays, ``The Confucian Impulse,'' surveys a range of topics from the Mings to the Manchus. Outstanding is Spence's recovery of the Ming painter Tao-chi, member of a brilliant artistic circle that Spence brings to life with remarkable color. A third section consists of a hodgepodge of essays on topics from food to opium. While exhaustively detailing Chinese culinary pleasures, Spence notes that, through much of Chinese history, ``it was the danger of famine that gave such urgency to agriculture and such joy to eating.'' He describes the crucial economic function of opium in late-19th-century China and measures political swings in the country according to its use. Other highlights include a penetrating analysis of Chinese director Bai Hua's controversial 1980 film, Bitter Love, and an admiring essay on eminent Harvard Sinologist John Fairbank. Is there a rare disease today?

Is there a rare disease today? I would say that my instructors said NO, there is no such thing. That, is why I bought the older volume. There is always something you could learn from referencing older volumes? The compilation has some insight to older practices. I have not yet fully taken the time to finish the volume. But have learned something valuable already.

Worth more than what i paid for it!

useful guide to rare horses and "zebras"

Although some of the conditions described in this book are not rare, they are not the commonest of diseases, either. I'd call it a guide to rare horse breeds and "zebras." There is not a great deal of information about each disease, but that's fine, because the purpose of this book is to help you think of alternative diagnoses. If you don't think of the diagnosis, you'll never make the diagnosis.

This very readable book is partly a biography of John von Neumann, partly a nontechnical history of the branch of mathematics known as game theory, and partly a description of some of the paradoxical findings that arise from that theory. Von Neumann was a brilliant mathematician who was the major figure in the Manhattan Project and later an active public figure. Thus, those portions of the book that deal with his life are interesting and informative. Those sections that deal with game theory use no mathematics beyond simple arithmetic and are thus fascinating, thought provoking, and easily accessible to the layperson. Multi-dimensional

The book intertwines three totally different subjects and to a degree that works well.

The book's take on historic cold war events is superficial. However, the discussion is more than simply the backdrop discussion. One gets some strange insights into the thinking of many who shaped the world. However, as with the other subjects, one is left wanting more.

The focus on Van Neumann often appears needless. One is never clear, despite heavy assertions, why he should be considered a cut above the rest of the great innovators in the game theory field the way Einstein is in the field of relativity. This is not to doubt Van Neumann's leading role or superiority but the book somehow never substantiates enough despite amusing anecdotes and many tales involving him.

On the key game theories, the book excels. For those more interested, the treatment would appear superficial. But few who are not experts won't walk away with some amazing insights. The real life connections are good. And the treatment is neither too simplistic nor excessively technical.

For anyone uninitiated on the subject, the book is a great start despite all the imperfections.

I have had the original book on game theory by ...

I have had the original book on game theory by John Von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern which is 600 + pages of dense math for many years. This book is more about the people involved with enough math to make the theories understandable. If you are into dense math you can start here and go on. If not you will probably start and stop here which is quite ok.

Great book not only on game theory, but on some of the practical applications of it.

I think it is a very good book as it well ties in game theory with some of the first historical applications (such as nuclear war strategy) and describes quite well some of the historic characters that were behind the initial development of the game theory.

A good reference

This volume provides a good reference for collectors of antique furniture. It includes a detailed chronology of styles and periods, coverering Europe and the US, and presents typical pieces of various categories of furniture, including details on construction. It is well illustrated. Unfortunately no relative values are provided. Also degree of rarity, popularity, etc. is also rarely mentioned.(A tip: I still think that Peter Philp's FIELD GUIDE TO ANTIQUE FURNITURE is much better. In fact, if you've got Philp's book, you don't really need this one).

It covers everything A to Z on the subject of identifying and authenticating period pieces. You WILL be able to identify period pieces once you've studied the book subjects. It offers hundred of pictures, with clear cut difinitions and examples.

If you are an antiques dealer, beginner or expert, you will not regret owning this very comprehensive guide.

This gorgeous, well-researched book contains everything you've ever wanted to know about dentistry and more. It is filled with beautiful color plates, excellent illustrations, and an informative text. The book covers the history and practice of dentistry around the world from ancient to modern times. Everyone who works in dentistry -- and even those who go to a dentist! -- should have a copy.

Very good text just needs improved illustrations, EBM statistics, and updated special tests, CPRs, and clusters

This is actually a very good text with the potential to be great. Most complete coverage of regional evaluation I have found in a single text. This text includes: Anatomical overview, observations, palpation, posture, gait, ROM, overpressure, MMT, neurotension, dermatomes, peripheral nerve patterns, trigger points with referral, internal organ referral. I have four issues that if addressed would make this the best text available:
1) They improved some of the illustrations between this edition and the last one, however others were not and make hard to correctly perform the technique such as the upper limb neurotension tests. Clear illustations or photographs would greatly enhance this area.
2) Include the EBM statistics for the testing. This could easily be accomplished in a table format added in the appropriate area of the chapters.
3) Several of the special tests used in this text are out of date, such as Homan's for DVTs, this should be updated to Well's criteria for DVTs has been shown to be significantly more reliable. Along with the inclusion of CPRs for common conditiond such as radiculopathy or carpal tunnel.
4) Inclusion of basic differential diagnosis questions and signs for referral from internal organs.
As I said previously, this is a very good text with the potential to be great.
