The code no longer works in the current Mathematica version

The section on symmetric chaos in the complex plane is inspired.
My library book lacks the cd rom, but tried typing in the Joukowski[]
plotting function only too find that it is almost impossible to translate into
the current version. I haven't tried other program code,
but that sure makes the price of the book seem high, if few of the programs work
anymore? Translation to the modern version of Mathematica would take time
and be hard for beginning students. If the coverage and worth of the
book were just the code I would give it a lower rating, but the author
has given new insight in many areas of complex analysis and
the book is worth reading by serious students.

A true delight

What a wonderful and delightful book. The author has taken a well-worn topic and infused it with insight and energy. Best of all, the author communicates simply and clearly. He has brought graduate complex analysis to the masses; I wish that I had a book like this as an undergraduate. It is also a great read: the kind of pick you could pick up and go cover to cover with. However, you'll probably want to be at your keyboard trying out his many examples. The unique thing about this tome is that it is well-written, it is mathematically ambitious and it is an invaluable reference for how to use Mathematica. Also, as we have come to expect from Cambridge, this book has excellent production quality.

About the Author
Deborah Gray White (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago) is Board of Governors Professor of History at Rutgers University. She is the author of many works including Too Heavy a Load: Black Women in Defense of Themselves, 1894-1994; Ar'n't I�a Woman? Female Slaves in the Plantation South; and the edited volume Telling Histories: Black Women Historians in the Ivory Tower. She is a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and the Woodrow Wilson International Center Fellowship. Her current project uses the mass marches and demonstrations of the 1990s to explore the history of the decade.�Mia Bay (Ph.D., Yale University) is Professor of History at Rutgers University and the Director of the Rutgers Center for Race and Ethnicity. Her publications include To Tell the Truth Freely: The Life of Ida B. Wells and The White Image in the Black Mind: African-American Ideas about White People, 1830-1925. She is a recipient of the Alphonse Fletcher Sr. Fellowship and the National Humanities Center Fellowship. Currently, she is at work on a book examining the social history of segregated transportation and a study of African American views on Thomas Jefferson.�Waldo E. Martin Jr. (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of No Coward Soldiers: Black Cultural Politics in Postwar America and The Mind of Frederick Douglass and serves as co-editor of the John Hope Franklin Series in African American History and Culture. Readers discover how PDE2D can be used to solve difficult partial differential equation problems, including nonlinear time-dependent and steady-state systems, and linear eigenvalue systems in 1D intervals, general 2D regions, and a wide range of simple 3D regions. The software itself is available to instructors who adopt the text to share with their students.

About the Author
GRANVILLE SEWELL, PHD, is Visiting Professor of Mathematics at Texas A&M University and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Texas at El Paso. He is the principal developer of PDE2D, a general-purpose partial differential equation solver. Dr. Sewell has written three books and published more than fifty articles on numerical methods and applications.

College course

I bought this book for a college course. It is an ok book and was useful for the class. However, it was not a particularly interesting book unless this topic is of great interest to you. It is written as a high level college text book and is not overly helpful and is not a step by step hand-holding math book (not that I was expecting it to be). This book is useful in the sense that there is not an abundance of books available on this specific topic.
