About the Author
Joel Reedy, BS in advertising from the University of Florida and MBA and marketing instructor at the University of South Florida in Tampa, has proven credentials in planning and execution of effective marketing programs. Before beginning his teaching career at USF in 1990, he worked as an advertising agency principal and marketing strategist for twenty years. His planning specialties included account planning, media planning, and process evaluation. While at USF, his attention has been directed toward segmentation and promotional strategies for more effective marketing performance, and he is an active user of electronic marketing tools as well as interactive technology. During his twelve years of full-time teaching at USF, Reedy has won four undergraduate teaching awards.

Shauna J. Schullo is currently the computer programmer analyst manager of academic computing at the University of South Florida. She holds a BS in chemistry, a MS degree in chemical engineering, and is pursuing her doctoral degree in instructional technology. Schullo has worked in the private industry and understands the application of online technology to commerce. She also brings classroom teaching experience and training in online and Web-related tools; she is an expert in many software packages including Lotus Notes, Excel, Access, Web browsers, electronic mail programs, HTML, and survey/forms design. Schullo is proficient in Authorware, multimedia packages, networking software, and graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere.

A lot has changed in a decade

Needed this book for an e-marketing class and it is incredibly out of date, its copy write was in 2004 and in just ten years so much has changed, this is more of a history book now than an accurate e-marketing textbook.

Great book

I found about the Kyogokudo series through a recent anime called Mouryou no Hako, the second book in the series. The Summer of Ubume is the first.

I found the pace of the book to be rather slow in the beginning chapter, but once the investigative work started up, I couldn't put the novel down. I read a good majority of it in two days times.

His character Akihiko Chuuzenji purports, "There is nothing strange in this world." The author, Natsuhiko Kyogoku, attempts to meld what is considered supernatural with the real world. He writes about a post-WWII modernizing Japan that still holds traditional superstitions such as possessing people with spirits. The lectures given by Chuuzenji often attempt to debunk the idea of spirits as the cause of a particular misfortune or explain certain phenomena like clairvoyance as something very real and of this world. It can be heavy at times, but the theories that he throws out are interesting and makes one think.

I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy the mystery genre but are not faint of heart. The truth behind the case is rather gruesome and disturbing, and the author does not mind detailing it. It is also a look into Japanese folklore and spirits, a whole different culture.

I hope that Vertical Inc. will be able to translate the whole series, as this series is like nothing I've encountered before.

A risky translation reaps a great reward

This isn't exactly a popular title to be translating into English, and the subject matter should have made it an automatic rejection at the publishing house. Let me get this straight... this is a book about obscure elements of the Japanese occult... described for dozens of pages on end with exacting historical detail and explained via psychology and philosophy of the mind... and this detailed backstory almost takes up more of the book than the mystery itself? Who would read it?!

Well, under the hands of an able translator, this book is not only readable but quite exciting. It's an extremely memorable read and makes you think differently about paranormal stories. It's definitely a modern tale that appeals to one's skeptical instinct while still cranking up the suspense and the stomach-wrenching horror. Pick it up.

Bizarre mix of folklore, philosophy & crime

An ubume is the spirit of a woman who dies pregnant. Grieving for her dead child, she's always on the lookout for live babies to steal. She's having a field day in The Summer of the Ubume.

It's 1952, and Tokyo is still recovering from the war. Rumor says that several babies have gone missing from the Kuonji obstetrics clinic. Rumor also reports that a Kuonji daughter has been pregnant for twenty months! And her husband has vanished!

It will take a bevy of detectives to penetrate the multiple mysteries of the Kuonji family:

TThere's Enokizu, an eccentric visionary hired by a Ryoko Kuonji to find her sister's vanished husband. Then there's Kyogokudo - bookseller, Shinto priest and part-time exorcist who applies his penetrating intellect to the case. Then we have the narrator, Sekiguchi, depressive hack journalist with a mysterious desire to serve Ryoko. And finally there's Kiba, an actual police detective.

Early on, Kyogokudo lectures his friend Sekiguchi on reality vs. illusion. My attention frankly flagged after twenty-eight pages of this. But finally the pace picked up, and the plot became positively gothic, encompassing demons, deviants, possession, repression, colorful psychological aberrations and arcane herbal drugs. Amazingly, the author explains it all in terms of science, psychology and logic.

This is not my favorite Japanese novel. It's too over-the-top for my taste, but this very quality will appeal to many other readers. There's no doubt the book is inventive and original. And I did admire the author's passion for mischievous supernatural creatures. Natsuhiko Kyogoku is an expert on Japanese folklore.

An important backdrop to same sex marriage debates

Debates about same sex marriage have captured Americans' imagination in recent years. But as Heath's book brilliantly shows, there's an important backdrop to these debates: efforts to promote marriage among heterosexual couples, especially poor and minority couples. DOMA's enactment and implementation across the country has been accompanied by Federal and State marriage promotion programs. Heath spent several months in Oklahoma, where these initiatives first began, and the result is a rich and engaging ethnography of marriage education policies. This is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary marriage, family, and sexuality politics and an excellent resource for sociology classes on marriage and family, gender, political culture, and qualitative methods. I'll be using it next year for my Sociology of Families course.

Excellent ethnographic analysis of marriage promotion policies!

As the first ethnographic study of marriage promotion politics, Heath's engagingly written and compellingly argued text offers a cogent analysis of political attempts to reinstitutionalize heterosexual marriage in the United States. It offers readers both a detailed overview of the academic and political debates over marriage promotion, as well as rich, theoretically-informed ethnographic data describing how marriage promotion policies play out on the ground. Heath takes the reader inside the marriage education classroom and highlights the voices of those who participate in government efforts to promote marriage, including policymakers, educators, couples, and individuals on welfare who are targeted by such policy efforts. In doing so, she brilliantly describes how marriage promotion policies and programs operate as a form of boundary work that reinforces the primacy of heterosexual marriage.

As a sociology professor who specializes in marriage, families, and social inequality, I highly recommend this text to anyone interested in the changing contours of American marriage! Great Poems

The Complete Collected Poems of Maya Angelou was published in 1994. When reading Maya Angelou’s poems I hear her voice in my head. When she read her poems she brought them to life for me. I love the rhythm and rhyme of her poems but also the story or narrative poems. Her poetry of slave and work songs she uses a personal narrative and emphases on the individual response to hardship, oppression and loss. She once said “Once I got into it I realized I was following a tradition established by Frederick Douglas-the slave narrative speaking in the first-person singular talking about the first-person plural, always saying I meaning ‘we’. And what a responsibility. Trying to work with that form, the autobiographical mode, to change it, to make it bigger, richer, finer, and more inclusive in the twentieth century has been a challenge for me.” The book is divided into a collection of love poems, slavery and work poems, and poems about the fight for equality-civil rights of the 50-60’s. It contains a few of my favorite poems, “And Still I rise”, I know why the Caged Bird Sings”, Phenomenal Women. And it also has “On the Pulse of Morning” the poem she wrote for President William Clinton’s inauguration. This is a book I will keep forever to read or and over again.

You don't have to like it. It's for the people that it speaks to, and if it doesn't speak to you, find something that does. To say it wasn't my cup of tea is one thing, but to declare something bad because it wasn't done to your specifications says that you don't have the soul for art. You don't have the creativity mind to understand subjectivity. Art is subjective.

I personally love many if not most of these poems. Some of them I connected with right away and others didn't carry meaning until I was older. There are even some that were not for me, but they were no less art than the ones that did.

Updated Reissue Necessary

The "complete" collected poems by Angelou dates back to 1994 and she is still alive. I noted that many of her poems were not included in the volume either because they were published after 1994 or because the publisher chose to omit some. Thus, I think Random House should consider updating and reissuing the volume of this important writer/poet.

About the Author
Lynn Henderson is a retired elementary teacher, who spent over forty years in the classroom working with children of all ability levels. Discovering the importance of early learning of phonics, she wrote this book to help children gain a thorough understanding of rhyming, letter sounds, and beginning dictionary skills. This is a wonderful book for young children. My grandchildren loved the interactive aspect to the story and the colorful illustrations! I would highly recommend this book to parents, as well as to teachers as a great addition to their classroom libraries.

About the Author
Ann Swinfen spent her childhood partly in England and partly on the east coast of America. She was educated at Somerville College, Oxford, where she read Classics and Mathematics and married a fellow undergraduate, the historian David Swinfen. While bringing up their five children and studying for a postgraduate MSc in Mathematics and a BA and PhD in English Literature, she had a variety of jobs, including university lecturer, translator, freelance journalist and software designer. She served for nine years on the governing council of the Open University and for five years worked as a manager and editor in the technical author division of an international computer company, but gave up her full-time job to concentrate on her writing, while continuing part-time university teaching. In 1995 she founded Dundee Book Events, a voluntary organisation promoting books and authors to the general public. Her first three novels, The Anniversary, The Travellers, and A Running Tide, all with a contemporary setting but also an historical resonance, were published by Random House, with translations into Dutch and German. The Testament of Mariam marked something of a departure. Set in the first century, it recounts, from an unusual perspective, one of the most famous and yet ambiguous stories in human history. At the same time it explores life under a foreign occupying force, in lands still torn by conflict to this day. Her second historical novel, Flood, takes place in the fenlands of East Anglia during the seventeenth century, where the local people fought desperately to save their land from greedy and unscrupulous speculators. This Rough Ocean is a novel based on the real-life experiences of the Swinfen family during the 1640s, at the time of the English Civil War. Currently she is working on a late sixteenth century series, featuring a young Marrano physician who is recruited as a code-breaker and spy in Walsingham’s secret service. The first book in the series is The Secret World of Christoval Alvarez, the second is The Enterprise of England, the third is The Portuguese Affair, the fourth is Bartholomew Fair and the fifth is Suffer the Little Children. In this, the fifth of the Chronicles of Christoval Alvarez

Our heroine Kit continues her disguise as a man, her friendship with James Burbage’s group of actors, and continues her involvement with Sir Francis Walsingham’s group of spies, this time seeking to prevent an assassination of Queen Elizabeth I. Swinfen re-creates the colorfully dangerous milieu of Elizabethan England, including historical and fictional characters with equal skill and interest for the reader. We even glimpse such luminaries as Christopher Marlowe and Will Shakespeare. Kit attempts to qualify as a full-fledged, licensed physician. Interest is continued in her relationship with Simon Hetherington, the Lopez family, the Nunezes, while most of the action revolves around Kit’s efforts to redeem the lives and condition of poor children in London. In the course of this broadening in her concerns, at one point she reflects “I no longer knew what I was, Christian or Jew. Perhaps it did not matter. If one tried to live a good life, and to care for others, to try to be worthy of this precious thing, a human life, why did theology matter? Could not God see into my heart?” Swinfen continues to grow her characters!

Wonderful stories!

You can count on Ann Swinfen for a good story, and her historical novels are especially appealing. Whether set in 17th-century Fenlands (Flood) or first century Galilee (The Testament of Mariam) or Elizabethan London (Christoval Alvarez), Swinfen’s books are solid history with intriguing characters and thoughtful, fast-moving plots. I am presently enjoying the Christoval Alvarez series, whose protagonist is a young Portuguese physician determined to survive and succeed in an English world that requires social adjustments. I won’t spoil this by telling how, but Swinfen employs a device that resonates even in today’s world. I have recently finished Suffer the Little Children, which details the plight of poor children in late 16th century London. Christ’s Hospital, which saved so many of them, is of special interest to readers in the United States because more than 1000 child apprentices came from there to the colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries and became progenitors of present-day families. I look forward to the 6th book in the Alvarez series, Voyage to Muscovy. I know it will take me to a world I could not imagine on my own. Hurray for Ann Swinfen, who can transport a reader in time and space and understanding

Series just keeps getting better

I have enjoyed all of this series—some books more than others, but every one has its own charms. This one was a particular pleasure. Kit is installed as an assistant physician at St. Thomas's Hospital, the second great facility caring for the poor in late 16th-century England, and in charge of the maternity ward. Abandoned, abused, and unwanted children are everywhere in this novel—the most compelling a group of young urchins who beg for food outside the playhouse where Kit's friend Simon makes his living as an actor. A young playwright named Will (with an unpronounceable last name—guess who?) has just joined the theater, and there are amusing references to his plays. For those wondering what exactly the Liberty Tuning is

Harvey Reid has long been one of my favorite folk or fingerstyle guitarists and folk singers. He is a true master of all kinds of stringed instruments like the guitar, banjo, 12-string, even the autoharp. I've seen him in concert twice and first bought a CD of his in the mid 80's. Now this Liberty thing is a cool system for quickly altering the guitar with a capo (well a special partial capo on only 3 strings) and teaching someone to be able to play the guitar with only two fretting fingers. I don't know if it's obvious or not but this is just a vastly easier way to play chords then having to use 3 or 4 fingers that most chords require. So you're thinking this could be very limiting, as most other re-tunings turn out to be, but Reid has recorded a few very accomplished albums showing plenty of sophisticated fingerstyle playing in various keys all on the same Liberty tuning. Essentially all the chords you would ever really need to play in most keys can be played with only the two fingers.

Obviously, the Liberty chord fingerings are completely different from standard chords and notation, which is what you really need the book for - Reid has worked out all the chords. So if you want to play the guitar in the standard way eventually, you will have to re-learn everything. I don't think that should put anyone off, as that's true of any simpler instrument, like if you start on a ukulele, all the chords are completely different from a guitar. You can play just about anything having chords as long as you have a Liberty chord table. But Mr Reid also as written a number of books with songs and tunes that work well with the system. I would probably say it's well worth it to buy a book or two along with the capo when getting into the system.

The other cool thing is that kids don't have to reach as far up the neck of the guitar - all fingering is done after the capo at the 4th fret so its easy to reach. So use a regular old guitar and you don't have to buy a special small kid's guitar that they will never want to play when they outgrow it.

If you're curious - here's HOW TO TUNE A GUITAR TO THE LIBERTY TUNING: As stated, you need one of Mr. Reid's partial capos that cleverly barre off 3 and only 3 strings. Starting with the standard tuning EADGBE, first just re-tune the B string up to C. Then put the partial capo on the neck at the 4th fret, across the D, G, B (now C) strings.

And no, any regular capo that I've ever seen will not work, as you are barring off strings in the center and leaving the low and high strings alone.

Actually I guess there is an alternate Liberty tuning, and other tunings, that barre off 4 strings or something, and these Flip 34 capos can be flipped over to barre off 4 strings. The world of partial capos is deeper than just the Liberty method, but that's a whole other story.

A totally new, affordable system that will efficiently expand your guitar repertoire

Absolutely the way to go if you aren't willing or able to devote long hours of study and practice to becoming a proficient guitar player! I am an advanced intermediate (30+ years) player, and am always willing to explorer new ways to make music. This method is an efficient and achievable way to play many popular and traditional songs using a partial capo. It is like shorthand for the fretboard, and will increase your playing enjoyment exponentially in proportion to the minimal time you devote to it. No additional musical knowledge or training necessary, other than familiarity with a guitar. Clearly explained and illustrated by Harvey Reid, who has been playing and providing guitar insights for over 40 years. Well worth the small cost, it is a self-contained and effective system.
