About the Author

Originally hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Ian Molyneaux ended up in IT purely by chance after applying for an interesting looking job advertised as "junior computer operator" in the mid '70s. The rest is history, 30 years later I've held many roles in IT, although I've shied away from anything management related as I'm a techie at heart. His current role is EMEA SME (Subject Matter Expert) for Application Performance Assurance at Compuware. Presently residing in Buckinghamshire, U.K. with wife Sarah, daughter Sasha, and two cats, and trying to get used to the idea of turning 49!

Good Primer, Lacks Depth

This well-written primer provides just enough information to help one get started with automated performance testing. It outlines several recommended practices to automating performance testing (e.g., user activity recording, deploying software monitors, etc) and describes how some of them were put to use in two case studies and how they helped in root cause analyses. It discusses desirable capabilities to look for in performance testing tools and only briefly mentions special considerations for technologically complex applications such as those that use AJAX, SAP, or Citrix, for example. A more in-depth discussion of those considerations and how to address them would have been really useful. Although information on select tool vendors and the type of tool offerings they provide is included, there is no additional description of any of the tools' capabilities or qualities (for this, the reader has to visit the provided vendor's website). Finally, most of the sample scenarios discussed in the book pertain to performance testing in Windows environments; while this won't matter to most readers because the principles discussed are equally applicable to other OS environments, this may matter to some readers who do not work with Windows environments at all.

Good Overview For Managers

As I've mentioned in my reviews of Effective Software Testing: 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your Testing and Implementing Automated Software Testing: How to Save Time and Lower Costs While Raising Quality, I recently became the manager of my company's automated and performance testing team. My background had previously been in application development, and I purchased this book to get an overview to performance testing. For the most part The Art of Application Performance Testing was a good choice. The core of the book is in chapters 2-4 where the author discusses the fundamentals of performance testing, the process of performance testing, and analyzing the results of a performance test. There were times when I didn't exactly follow some Molyneaux's thought process so I didn't get 100% of the material. This meat and potatoes section of the book is also only about 90 pages so it wouldn't have hurt to have a little more explanation. The biggest example of this was the example he gave where he calculated the virtual user numbers for an application that was going to have an increase in concurrent users. The table with the current production numbers and the numbers for the test seemed to drop out of the air with minimal explanation. This surprised me a bit because I rarely have difficulty following technical books. The other issue I had with this book is one that should never happen. A number of the tables and charts used fonts that were too small to be readable. I have 20/20 near vision, and I have never had a problem with a technical book like this. The final consideration I would offer readers is the price in comparison to the size of the book. The chapter material tops out at 114 pages, and I would say that the cover price of the book is probably overpriced by about 30-40%. Perhaps the author thought that the lack of already published material on this subject merited the higher cost.

It may seem that my comments to mesh with the number of starts that I gave the book. In the end the two material issues I had with the book did not keep me from achieving the purpose I set out with when I bought the book. I know have a good understanding of performance testing so it was worth the investment even if I consider it to have been a little higher than necessary. People who do performance testing as their day to day activity will only find a base level of knowledge here. This is not a stopping point if you are looking to build up your performance testing skills. I would almost put this in the "for managers" category.

Great reference

Though this book is geared towards Quality Assurance testers, developers can take away a lot from this material. The book explains methodologies at a high level and remains vendor-agnostic which is nice, but the context always seems to hover around Windows. If it were not for the specific case studies (which seem like they are from the author's personal experience) I would have to say this book would be more on the boring side.

The author did a great job of "teaching a man to fish" instead of "giving a man a fish". For example, in chapter 2, instead of simply giving a list of tools and telling readers to try them, the author goes into details about what to look for in a performance testing tool and how to choose one based on the scenario.

I would recommend this text to anyone who is new to testing as a great introduction, but I would suspect that experienced testers would also gain some insight from it as well.

Powerful Concepts Made Easy to Understand

As an entrepreneur, this book summarized for me the important concepts of finance and financial strategy in a way that is easily digestible. This is no easy task because I've read a few finance books over the years and honestly, this has been the most useful and practical one I've read thus far. So whether you're looking for a refresher on financial concepts you've already learned or for book that will teach you about new ones, this is definitely a great read.

The single best book on finance I have ever read. Steven Rogers, Professor of Entrepreneurship at Kellogg, is brilliant. I took a course from him during my MBA program at Northwestern and it was by far my favorite. This update on his first addition is excellent.

Aries the ram looking back at the stars, he argues, is connected to astrological beliefs of the Magi, the Three Wise Men, and has much to tell us about this regal portent. At the time of Christ's birth, Aries was a symbol of Judea. Ancient astrologers, such as the Magi, believed that a new king would be born when the moon passed in front of Jupiter-an eclipse that would herald the Messiah's coming. A novel approach to a perennial enigma.

The Star of Bethlehem is a perennially favorite topic for planetarium shows, articles, musings, sermons, and books. What could be left at this late date to say about it? Quite a lot, actually. Enough so that two new books, both titled "The Star of Bethlehem" (How original!) and both copyright 1999 are on my desk as I write.
The story about the Star is found only in the Gospel of Matthew. There are three possibilities: 1) The star was a myth - invented by the writer of Matthew or earlier Christians whom he followed, in order to give Jesus appropriately royal auspices for his birth. 2) The star was a miracle provided by God to guide the Magi, even perhaps visible only to them. 3) The star was a natural astronomical event or events. These three are obviously mutually exclusive and exhaustive. If either of the first two possibilities are correct, there is little more to be said; therefore both of our authors give them short shrift.
Both books cover some of the same material in about the same way. Jesus was *not* born on December 25 of 1 BC as worked out by the Scythian monastic scholar Dionysius Exiguus (Denny the Dwarf) in 525 AD. King Herod, of whom the Magi inquired about the birth, died in 4 BC. For other reasons, the birth is fairly firmly dated to between 6 and 4 BC. If the shepherds were `abiding with their flocks by night', the birth did not take place in December. For various reasons, these authors agree that Spring is more likely.
"The Star of Bethlehem - An Astronomer's View", by Mark Kidger, gives a review of all the various suggestions that have been made over the years, finally settling on a combination of events being the sign: a triple conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Pisces (the sign Kidger says is associated with the Jews - more on this later) between May and December of 7 BC, with Mars approaching this pair in February of 6 BC, followed by a near-occultation of Jupiter by the Moon in Pisces in February of 5 BC, and then, possibly a nova in March/April 5 BC, as suggested by some Korean and Chinese records.
I would have found this scenario plausible were it not for the second, and to my mind more interesting, book: "The Star of Bethlehem - The Legacy of the Magi" by Michael R. Molnar. There are two problems, as pointed out by Molnar, with the kinds of solutions reviewed, and those eventually suggested, by Kidger. Firstly, they tend to focus on what we as moderns would find to be visually compelling sights in the heavens. But this neglects the fact that the Magi were certainly *astrologers*, most likely Hellenistic rather than Babylonian in their astrological theories. Most of the events put forward would not have been significant to contemporary astrology. Kidger himself makes this point but does not seem to follow through with a close study of Hellenistic astrology as Molnar has made. Secondly, we have the advantage over the Magi of *knowing*, at least approximately, what the correct time frame is, then sifting through a small number a years to find the most significant events during those years. We have to imagine an ongoing community of astrologers, scanning the skies for generations perhaps, and imagine what would have been absolutely unique over many years, and compelling enough to make them undertake an arduous journey. In this light, Kidger's series of events are not so special.
Molnar made a key discovery, beginning with a study of ancient coins, which often incorporated astrological symbols, that Aries was the constellation contemporary astrologers believed controlled the Levant, of which Judea was a part. The identification of Pisces with the Jews is Medieval and hence anachronistic in this context.
When the Magi say "...we have seen his star in the east...", they would have been referring to the helical rising of a star or planet - that is, when it is newly visible in the morning sky rising ahead of the sun. Jupiter had its heliacal rising on April 17 of 6 BC in Aries. On that same day, the moon occulted Jupiter for the second time in a row (previously on March 20). This would have greatly increased the astrological significance of kingly Jupiter. Molnar covers about half a dozen other astrological portents for this day, involving rulers of the trines, exaltations, attendance, and beneficent planets, that space does not permit me to explain in detail. In terms of astrological import, this day is absolutely unique for hundreds of years, and Molnar makes a strong case, to my mind, that he has indeed found the origin of the curious story in Matthew.
Astronomers tend to be instantly dismissive of anything having to do with astrology, even to the extent of neglecting its proper application to a historical problem such as this one. Astrology, like it or not, is an important part of the history of human thought, and of the history of astronomy itself, which grew out of it. Michael Molnar is to be congratulated for shedding light on this ancient way of thinking.

Very objective, very well researched.

Michael Molnar has produced a superbly researched book. Easy to read and informative, yet with enough technical detail to impress any expert; historical or astrological. Personally I was enthralled by his presentation of the astrological data; the horoscope for the day April 17, 6 B.C.; the actual planetary alignments and the meanings conveyed to astrologers of the time. Totally impressive. I myself do not study astrology, but I would immediately recommend this book to anyone who has,or to anyone who has ever wondered about the biblical story as I have. His research is extremely relevant to our cynical modern age, giving confident and entirely convincing answers to a story which for me always raised questions. His objectivity is impressive; one cannot determine from the writings whether or not the author is himself a religious man. Very well laid out, logically presented, a superb read. Two thumbs way up!

Press, Mark has been named a Woolmark Prize finalist, GQ’s best new menswear designer in America, and Complex’s man of the year in style. A member of the CFDA, he lives in Los Angeles.

Easy and fun read

Easy and fun read. I feel like this is something every dude should read. I love how he points out the pitfalls of fashion so many men fall into by either not caring what they look like or by caring too much. At least for me, this book helped articulate many of my own thoughts about men's fashion and helped feel more confidant about not conforming to many traditional beliefs about maturity and what's considered professional attire.

About the Author
One of the longest running publishers for women Shufu-no-Tomo has been releasing craft and fashion magazines and mooks since 1915. With its first publication, the semenal magazine, Shufu-no-Tomo in March 1917 SnT has set the standard for design for women ages 20 to 35 in Japan for generations. SnT currently publishes around 15 magazines and dozens of books each year making them one of the more recognized sources for crafts, cooking and women's fashion in Japan today.

Some experience required.

Lots of great recipes. (There's one for deep-fried carrots that comes out tasting like sweet potato. My dad hates cooked carrots and he was eating these like candy.) There are ways to prepare things ahead for bento, what's best made fresh and what can live in the fridge for a while, and many other great tips. Definitely a keeper for the bento library.

My only quibbles (and they are small ones) is that this is not necessarily a beginner's bento cookbook. It expects some previous knowledge of how to cook in a Japanese fashion. (If you are a newbie to this sort of cooking, I highly recommend the youtube channel Cooking With Dog, hosted by a lovely grey poodle. The videos are an excellent way to familiarize yourself with Japanese cooking and their recipes are also delicious.) It is translated from a Japanese magazine, so it will not hold American hands through the very basics. On the other hand, this is a good thing because it doesn't rehash the simplest of recipes over and over and over again. (Rolled Egg Sheets, I'm looking at you.)

Such a great resource, and so easy to use!

The book is so easy to use thanks to well-organized recipes that are arranged by suggestions of what and how to pack to compliment colors and flavors. The book has many great suggestions and tips for cooking and packing each recipe. As an American, there are only two things about the book that give me pause, but in Japan they are perfectly normal so I didn't want to take any stars away. First, there is little to no fear of salmonella and many other food-borne bacteria, plus as is evident from the food safety and cleanliness processes that the author recommends over and over in the book, they are big on that so it further cuts down the fear of food poison and other problems with eating an unrefrigerated bento. They typically do not microwave bento items either, making cup noodles or soups with "soup bombs" where they pack the ingredients and use an electric hot water dispenser. Because of this, many bento boxes are not microwave safe. So if food safety and bacteria is a concern in your area of the world, you might want to use ice packs and just take them out an hour or so before you want to eat your lunch. If you need to microwave something, be sure your bento box is approved for it. Also, I try to pack a little less starch (in a typical Japanese-origin bento cookbook, you are recommended that half your container is rice, which is a bit much for me) and fill that space with vegetables, but the proportions are fairly good sizes otherwise. Those things are really preferences, though, and don't take away from how amazing this book is. It truly creates delicious, easy recipes that are a nice break from my typical western-style lunches.

Update: I made the karaage (fried chicken) recipe tonight. I had skipped over it because I have a version I learned years ago that I like, so I went on to try other recipes for things I'd never eaten before. I am sorry I skipped it now, because this version trumps my old one by a mile. It was delicious and so easy. I was a little nervous about the broad bean paste because it smelled like fermented funk stank in a jar. When you cook the chicken, all the funky smell goes away and it just makes the chicken taste extra savory in a great way. I wish I had added a little more. A little goes a long way though. The potato starch made the chicken crisp up really fast, so the pieces cooked in just about two minutes or so for bite-sized chunks.

***Don't be thrown by the recipes calling for cake flour. Other Japanese recipe books I've bought do the same. It means AP flour (wheat flour with no salt or leavening), as opposed to rice flour. It doesn't mean the stuff called cake flour in the US, but you could use that too in a pinch.***

A Good Addition To Your Bento Library

Exhaustive & encyclopedic, this book contains just about everything you need to know about preparing bento lunches. Tips on freezing, thawing, best foods to freeze or refrigerate, how to pack a bento and how to keep it safe. Confusing layout at first but after a second read I see the sense in how it's arranged. Frozen foods first, organized by type of meat (pork, chicken, beef) then refrigerated foods similarly arranged, then sides arranged by color (a bento should include foods that are red, green yellow, etc). Lots of standard recipes, old favorites and some I have never seen before. There is probably something for everyone in this book.

You will not find cute little animal faces or whimsical cut out sandwiches. You will find basic bentos, lots of variety, step by step instructions and color photos on every page.
