Great start- piques curiosity but doesn't explain much

My husband and I are enjoying this book. However, it is not exactly what I was hoping it would be. I was so excited by the table of contents, lots of concepts into which I would love to dive deeper. It has been great for stimulating conversation but not as clever or intricate as I expected. It is not very well synthesized; it is a serious of essays on different superhero related topics. The essays were clearly written independently. The psychology is somewhat superficial, and the concepts are a bit simplistic. This is great for kids or superhero beginners. I would have enjoyed more in depth, provocative explorations. It just taps on a few psychology buzzwords and good questions without really answering much.

Other than my enjoyment of watching superhero films, this book gave me so much confidence in my future goal of becoming a college professor. , I, even, found ideas I plan to use for my classes in urban sociology. These writers are, license, psychiatrist and psychologist who've taken a psychological aspect of the superhereos we've grown to love. I, even, found out about Frank Castle, whose story is quite a read. It is refreshing to know there are people, grown adults, who were able to find something more interesting than people fighting crime, or villians who want to create havoc. It was worth the read.

Intriguing anthology on comic book superheroes

An interesting and varied collection of essays on an understanding of super-familiar American comic book superheroes. This would be useful as a supplemental (not required) text in undergraduate (and perhaps even graduate) courses like personality theory, psychopathology and social psychology. A number of pieces are thoughtful if not deeply critical; others are pedestrian. A nice read on leisurely weekends at the beach.

I am a great Jack Finney fan. It all started with " Time and Again" and continues.. there are few books I do not loan out. Finney's are on that short list. I will buy another copy to loan before giving up my personal favorites. If you enjoy time travel of a higher level.. no sappy love story..the whole story revolves around
the traveling. O sure there is romance, but not that dippy, sickening sweet, ( you get the idea) mush!! Give it a chance......

About the Author
Nigel Dennis (1912-1989) was born in England and educated variously in Rhodesia, South African, Austria and Bavaria. He wrote too little but for all that there were three novels (and one that was disowned), four plays, a volume of poetry and three works of non-fiction. For twenty years he was the lead reviewer for the Sunday Telegraph. His study of Jonathan Swift, one of his heroes as his own mastery of satire suggests, won the Royal Society of Literature award. Faber Finds is reissuing his three novels: Boys and Girls Come Out to Play, The Cards of Identity and A House in Order.

Best unknown novel of all time

Actually Cards of Indentity is four books and a play. The "plot" involves a group of "psychologists" who take over a country home by mental tricks in order to hold a convention. Three of the books are 'papers' delivered at the convention. The play (which you will swear was written by Shakespeare) is the entertainment at the end of the convention. A must read.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and am constantly putting my sanity at risk by first recommending my friends read it, then having to
lend it to them because it is so hard to find!!

Its message is roughly that we shouldn't allow ourselves to be forced to behave in a particular way just because someone claims they are an expert in who/what `people' are.

Dr. Roy Yates received the B.S.E. degree in 1983 from Princeton University, and the S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in 1986 and 1990 from M.I.T., all in Electrical Engineering. Since 1990, he has been with the Wireless Information Networks Laboratory (WINLAB) and the ECE department at Rutgers, University. He is currently an associate professor.

David J. Goodman is Director of WINLAB and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rutgers University. Before coming to Rutgers, he enjoyed a twenty year research career at Bell Labs where he was a Department Head in Communications Systems Research. He has made fundamental contributions to digital signal processing, speech coding, and wireless information networks.

Perhaps an excellent book on the subject, but as far as an "introduction" goes...

First, I suppose I should mention that I am a student, and not a lecturer. Next, I'll sum up my opinion of this book by saying that it is a terrible stand-alone way of attempting to learn the material.

My largest concern with the text is that, past the cover of the book, it makes no attempt to be an introduction to anything. My main gripe in this respect is that the author doesn't attempt to explain the notation, beyond a very brief review here and there. A review of what, exactly, I'm not entirely sure. This wouldn't present a huge obstacle if one had a competent professor, but in my situation I was stuck with a lecturer who felt the book was good enough to teach directly, and I mean directly, from. Considering the huge dearth of examples in the text, this can create a massive problem for students that are actually new to the material.

Which prompts my next issue with the book. There are next to no examples for many of the sections. Many sections contain one example, which is useless and inapplicable to the homework problems and quiz problems (Which are all useless and inapplicable themselves without a solutions manual, especially when your professor doesn't take the time to go over them). -A quick aside here, I should note that this review is biased due to my experience with an inept professor. When the class regularly lets out half an hour early, there's no excuse not to take the time to go back over the homework, since the TA's don't. With that in mind, with a decent lecturer, many of the problems with this text could be easily overcome- Why there aren't at least some solutions, or solutions for the quiz problems, is beyond me, as it would really aid understanding to see how one or two actual problems are worked, instead of just showing a graph and calling it an example.

To sum it up, this book is incredibly frustrating.

Not so much...

Hardly a "friendly" and "introductory" text. The language, examples and feel of this book are more suited for someone with prior training in this subject. For the student facing the unfortunate situation of having to learn with this text it may be better to get another book and learn the material from it rather than waste a large amount of time with this one. For folks who already understand the subject I'm sure it's quite good.

Im so lost as to why this book has such good reviews. Sure the authors may give many examples that they understand, but with no answers or concrete explanations, this book is just a waste of my time reading. I actually started reading this book, but like i said, there are no answers as to know if your on the right path. I actually learned more by searching online. ONE more thing...This book gets pretty boring with all these useless examples...

This book takes the viewpoint that plain symbol processing techniques have little hope of reproducing the depth and breadth of capabilities found in human beings. The book introduces new foundational principles to AI: connectionist/neural networking methods, case based and memory based methods and picture processing.

The book looks at methods of AI as different ways of doing pattern recognition. One way to do pattern recognition is to compare a problem to stored cases. At the other end of the spectrum, Classical Symbol Processing AI compresses cases down to a small set of rules and then works only with this condensed knowledge. In between these two extremes are neural networks, especially backprop type networks. As much as possible the book compares these three basic methods using actual AI programs.

The structure of the book starts at the bottom of human abilities with vision and other simple pattern recognition abilities and moves on to the higher levels of problem solving and game playing and finally to the level of natural language and understanding of the world. At the higher levels more complex computer architectures are needed that include methods for structuring thoughts.

The book is organized in a manner in which the reader will get an intuitive feeling for the principles of AI. Throughout the book applications of basic principles are demonstrated by examining some classic AI programs in detail. The book can serve as a text for juniors, seniors and first year graduate students in Computer Science or Psychology and includes sample problems and data for exercises and a list of frequently asked questions.

Easy to read book

Somewhere between a general audience book and a text

I found this book quite interesting due to the way it was structured (from low-level tasks requiring pattern recognition and neural networks to high-level tasks such as game playing and natural language), and due to the author's use of pattern recogniton as a theme for intelligence. In many sections towards the end of each chapter, he also hints at how it may be possible to merge the connectionist and symbolic approaches to AI. For example, with respect to game playing, he discusses possible ways to include backpropagation as tool for evolving a good game evaluation function for backgammon. I also found his intuitive discussions on neural networks (chapters 2 and 3) quite engaging, with an emphasis on possible applications more so than a rigorous mathematical treatment. One main problem I have with the book, however, is its tendency to oversimplify or omit important aspects of the theory. For example, no where does he mention Bayesian classification methods in the pattern recognition chapters. And in general he does not seem to acknowledge the importance of probability in AI. I plan to use the text in a 5 week summer course in AI, because I believe that, with such short time, a terse but engaging book along with good lecture notes seems most appropriate. However, had the couse been 10 or 16 weeks, I would have opted for a more standard text that has 3x as many pages and definitions (e.g. Nilsson's good book). In closing, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning some AI , but does not want to be overburdened with math, or to an expert who prefers to browse the discussions to gain a possibly new perspective on the material.

The book provides an alternative approach to learning AI.

This is an interesting book that introduces AI from a pattern recognition point of view.The author attempted and solved many complex problems by neurocomputing approach. He thus emphasizes the need for neural approach in Artificial Intelligence. He however did not eliminate the scope of all conventional approaches. Some comparative study of the conventioanl and neural algorithms are apparent from the text. The writing style is beautiful. Mature readers will find the book like a novel. I strongly recommend the book for those who want to see the contrast between the "symbol processing AI" and "the neural AI".
